Shot list for Chora — 08:00 call, 20:12 wrap
Give Chora one full day and two evenings, entirely on foot — the old-town streets are too narrow to drive and parking is nonexistent [4]. Shoot it in order: Old Market lanes before 09:00 [20], Kastro mid-morning [4], a swim at Agios Georgios after lunch [21], the waterfront after 18:00, and the Portara for the last hour of light [4]. The building is closed inside the "Islet of Museums in the Castle of Chora" renovation. Since 15 May 2021, and for the duration of the works, a Temporary Exhibition runs on the second floor of the Saint Ursula Cultural Center in the former Ursulines monastery [8]. The permanent home — a five-storey 17th-century Venetian mansion, the old School of Commerce [25] where Kazantzakis studied [26] — is worth a look from outside even shut.
Greece's first on-site museum of its type, created 1999, nominally €5 — but the ministry's own listing now carries the notice "The museum will be closed from 01.08.2025" [9], and Greeka lists it as permanently closed [10]. The Glezos Tower is slated to become the largest Byzantine museum in the Cyclades — restoration is ongoing and it is not open [5].
Low sun · empty lanes
The Greek quarter spreading around and below the castle walls; the name is the Italian borgo [18]. A maze of lanes, shops and tavernas — marble underfoot, arches overhead, staircases into courtyards into more staircases [20].
Morning light on the water
Part of the Mycenaean-era capital, around 1300 BC — agora and settlement, with some structures now submerged in the sea, viewed from above on the north side of the harbour below Mitropoleos Square [17]. The Orthodox Metropolis church, Zoodochos Pigi (1787), stands right beside it [16].
Hard shadows in the gates
Marco Sanudo founded it in 1207 as the seat of his Duchy of the Archipelago: pentagonal, built partly from recycled ancient acropolis marble and blocks from the Portara temple itself [5]. Of three original gates two survive — Trani Porta (the "Great Gate", north-west) and Paraporti (south) [6]; the north-western entrance still carries its original wooden gate [26].

Not the museum you booked in your head. While the "Islet of Museums" works run, the collection shows as a free Temporary Exhibition on the second floor of the former Ursulines monastery, 09:00–14:00, closed Tuesday [8].
Shade the whole way
The Glezos Tower, also called the Crispi Tower, is the only survivor of the twelve that once guarded the perimeter — and the only circular one [5]. Walk the quarter the way the municipality lays it out rather than wandering: Trani Porta → Della Rocca Barozzi tower → Tower of Crispi → Catholic Cathedral → Panagia Theoskepasti → Capuchin monastery → Archaeological Museum → Capella Kazatza → Ursuline school [7].

On the central square of the Kastro, 13th century, decorated with Naxian marble [15] — a stop on the municipality's own castle walk rather than a destination in itself [6].
The one museum that delivers
The single museum in Chora that reliably delivers in 2026. A family mansion beside the castle's north gate [25], shown by a staff member — furniture, clothing and heirlooms [11]. Around forty minutes, bilingual English/Greek, about €4 [12].
Blown-out midday · shoot the shade
The dead hour of the day, and the one the old town is best at: arches, marble, staircases into courtyards into more staircases [20]. Eat here rather than on the waterfront, then get out of the sun.
Late light on the water
About 1 km from the port and the town centre, a flat 15-minute walk along the waterfront road, Blue Flag, shallow and calm [21] — five minutes south of the port by the shortest line [20]. Sand is free; sunbeds are paid [21].

The seafront strip is also the town's utility belt — bus station, banks, luggage storage and car-rental offices all sit along it [18], which is exactly why basing in Chora removes the need for a vehicle.
Be on the rock 45 min early
Four marble blocks of roughly 20 tons each, all that was ever built of a temple of Apollo begun around 530 BC by the tyrant Lygdamis; the islet of Palatia is joined to town by a paved footpath [1]. Ten minutes total from the harbour front — five across the causeway, five up the hill [3]. Open-air, no gate, 24/7, free [2].
The money shot
The frame the whole day is built around. It is also the most crowded thing in Chora: it gets very busy around sunset in summer, and dawn is the answer if you want it quiet [3].
Nightlife is concentrated in Chora along the seafront and the old-town lanes, and bar-hopping is entirely walkable [24]. Named options in town: 520 in a 1700s building with an Aegean view [23] — a rooftop terrace in the old market looking over the port and the Kastro [20]; The Naxos Apothecary near the port facing the Portara; Oinochoros for small-winery Greek bottles; On The Rocks on the Chora beachfront; Prime if you want the loud end [23].
Classical, jazz, choral, Byzantine and traditional music in the Venetian Museum's courtyard or basement, April through October [13][14]. Book in advance at the museum (22850 22387); the ticket includes a glass of local wine or kitron [13]. The museum's own 19:00–22:00 evening opening [11] doubles as the way in.

Shallow, easy, convenient [21] — save the day for Plaka or Agia Anna and use this one for a pre-dinner swim.
The west-coast strip south of Chora carries a 3–4 day trip; the east coast and the remote south are day-eaters you should skip unless a boat or a specific obsession justifies them.
Two driving loops and one dawn climb cover the whole interior: the Tragaea in a day, Zas plus Apeiranthos in a second, the emery north as an optional third.
Naxos is the one Cycladic island that feeds itself — two PDO cheeses, a PGI potato, a PGI citron liqueur — and the eating is inland, not on the beach strip.
For a 3–4 night first visit, base in Chora — port, buses, dinner and a beach are all on foot; the beach strip wins only for a pure swim-and-sleep trip.
Take the fast ferry from Piraeus, rent a car for 2 of your 3–4 days, and let the bus cover the beach days.
On a 3–4 day first visit, no off-island ferry day trip beats Naxos itself; the only day-boat worth booking never asks you to change islands.
