Fly or take the high-speed ferry from Piraeus (3h15–3h25 vs 5h+ on Blue Star) [1], and rent a car for 2 of your 3–4 days — the mountain villages and the south/east coast are the half of Naxos the bus network does not usefully reach [7][8]. Beach days need no car: Line 1 runs the west-coast strip every 30 min in season [8].

Book July–August crossings 2–3 months ahead; high-speed seats, cabins and car spots sell out, and 15 August is a national travel peak [3]. Blue Star is the weather-robust choice — catamarans cancel first in wind [3]. Turboprops mean small holds: ~8 kg cabin at 55×40×20 cm, checked 20–23 kg only on higher fares, and hand luggage is often gate-checked into the hold on ATRs [6].
⚠ A conventional afternoon Piraeus sailing lands after dark [1] → rental desks and the KTEL office are shut, so day 1 is written off. The port is in Chora itself and walkable to town [1]; the airport is 3 km out with no bus, ~€15–18 by taxi [7][9].

EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian licences are accepted without an IDP; a category-B car licence covers ATVs and quads [11]. Main and mountain roads are paved, steep and winding — 40–50 km/h through villages; park only in Chora’s municipal lots (€40 fine otherwise) [9]. Buy bus tickets before boarding — drivers sell none [7].
Bus-only trip loses: the Tragaea/Apeiranthos loop on your own schedule, remote east-coast coves, and the far south [7][8].
