A weekend in Fürstenau, anchored on Schauenstein

Where to sleep, walk, eat and drive around a Saturday-night Caminada tasting menu — one Caminada-owned village, two lodging tiers, a 30 km activity arc, and an honest gap on dinner mechanics.

Three facts about Fürstenau dominate every other planning decision and recur across all four sub-topics. First, the village is officially the world’s smallest city [1] — practically meaning the Caminada family owns the gravity well: the 3-star Schloss Schauenstein [2], the boutique Casa Caminada ~3 minutes away [3], the 1-star vegetarian OZ [4], and the Pasternaria wood-fired bakery [5] are all within 100 m of each other. The “where to sleep, where to lunch, where to grab coffee” stack collapses into one ecosystem. Second, only four beds in the world actually walk home from the Saturday dinner — Schauenstein’s 12 rooms (CHF 610–1,070+) [2], Casa Caminada’s 10 (CHF 260–380) [6], Gasthaus Waldheim ≈10–15 min away with shared baths [7], and Gasthaus Post across the Hinterrhein bridge in Sils [8]. Everything else is a taxi, and CHF 80–120 each way [9] — fine if the lodging is the trip, ruinous if it’s the dinner.

The “special-character” lodging child therefore matters most for which village you wake up in rather than where you walk home from. That recasts those villages as day-trip anchors — and the activities sub-topic confirms the loop closes cleanly. Splügen (~30 km, where the 1722 Bodenhaus and 1375 Alte Herberge Weiss Kreuz sit) is itself a Wakker-Prize village core [10]. Andeer (Hotel Fravi) doubles as the practical Mineralbad Andeer day-stop (CHF 19.50, walk-in, 8:00–21:00) [11] and the Sennerei Andeer cheese pilgrimage (Wisconsin gold, 2010) [12]. Thusis (Weiss Kreuz, ~3 km — also where Schauenstein’s free shuttle terminates [13]) is the Viamala Gorge trailhead [14]. Wergenstein (Capricorns) sits at the foot of the Glaspass Erlebnisweg Beverin walk [15]. Chur (Romantik Stern) is both the museum cluster and the only place inside the radius with any tech-event programming — small German-language meetups at ibW and FH Graubünden, free, weekday-evening [16]. Every “characterful lodging” village pulls double duty as a daytime destination.

For the tech-conference framing the answer is honest: nothing inside the strict 30 km line is conference-scale. Davos sits 47 km by road [17] and the only clean fit is Davos Tech Summit, Sat 4 Jul 2026 (Physical AI, family-day Saturday) [18] — drive down for evening service. WEF and Alpine Tech Forum cluster in mid-January but spike lodging across the canton.

One gap to flag. The parent brief named dinner mechanics (tasting-menu price, wine-pairing cost, meal length, dress code, whether the table books with a room) as a constraint feeding every sub-topic. The children verified the table-with-room mechanic (Schauenstein takes both up to 8 months ahead [19]) and the meal-length implication (taxi, not walk, after pairings) — but actual menu pricing, the pairing supplement, and dress code did not get fixed.
