Walking-distance lodging at or near Schloss Schauenstein

After a 3-star tasting menu you don't want to drive. Four options in Fürstenau actually walk home — two on the Caminada estate, two third-party inns.

18 sources ~4 min read #89 switzerland · graubunden · michelin · lodging · fine-dining · schauenstein · caminada
TL;DR. Sleep in the castle itself (CHF 610–1,070+) if budget allows — dinner ends, you climb the stairs[9]. Otherwise Casa Caminada (CHF 260–380, same chef, ~3 min walk[7]) is the obvious value play. Gasthaus Waldheim (~10–15 min walk, ~$119, shared bath[11]) is the only cheap in-village option; Gasthaus Post in Sils (~20–25 min walk across the river[14]) is the closest non-Fürstenau bed.

The four walkable beds

Property Walk to Schauenstein Rooms Rate/night (CHF, incl. breakfast) Caminada-run
Schloss Schauenstein[1] 0 min (same building / adjacent Seidenhaus / Meierhaus across the courtyard)[3] 12 (6 in castle, 3 Seidenhaus, 3 Meierhaus)[1] 610–1,070+ (top suite + tower room)[1] ✓ (Caminada flagship)[2]
Casa Caminada[5] ~3 min ("nearly a 5-minute walk")[7] 10[5] 260 / 290 / 340 / 380 (Standard → Deluxe Plus)[5] ✓ (Caminada's casual sister)[6]
Gasthaus Waldheim[10] ~10–15 min (≈0.5 mi, in Fürstenaubruck)[10] 6 (⚠ shared shower/WC in corridor)[11] ~110–140 (≈ from $119)[10]
Gasthaus Post (Sils im Domleschg)[14] ~20–25 min (across the Rhine bridge, uphill back)[14] Several (single, double, family) — all with private bath[15] Not listed publicly — contact direct[15]

Fürstenau is "officially the world's smallest city"[8]; TripAdvisor confirms only the two B&Bs above are in the village[13]. Everything else means crossing the Hinterrhein to Sils, or driving.

Detail per property

Schloss Schauenstein — sleep where you ate

12 rooms across 3 buildings · CHF 610–1,070+/night · Caminada flagship · The Living Circle member[4]

The dining room and your bed are under the same roof (or the next-door Seidenhaus / Meierhaus across the courtyard)[3]. Reviewers literally describe being "taken back upstairs" after dinner[9]. Rates by room: Zimmer Linde / Suite Ahorn / Zimmer Caminada / Zimmer Canova → CHF 610; Suite Wasser / Kastanie / Caminada / Viamala / Carschenna → CHF 740; Suite Feuer / Erde → CHF 840; Suite Luft (largest) → CHF 1,070, +CHF 250 for the tower bedroom[1]. All rates include breakfast, complimentary minibar, espresso machine, library/lounge/pool access, free bike rental, and airport transfers[1]. Hotel availability is Wed afternoon → Mon noon[1] — Saturday dinner sits squarely inside that window. Book both room and table together up to 8 months out[17]; 4.8/5 on TripAdvisor, ranked #1 lodge in Fürstenau[9].

Casa Caminada — same chef, half the price, ~3 min away

10 rooms · CHF 260–380/night · Caminada-run · Michelin Green Star on the in-house restaurant[6]

A 300-year-old barn/stable, converted in 2018 by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola into a minimalist-chic alpine boutique[8][18]. Four price tiers: Standard CHF 260 (19 m²) / Standard Plus CHF 290 (19.5 m²) / Deluxe CHF 340 (40 m²) / Deluxe Plus CHF 380 (37 m²), all with breakfast, double bed, balcony, TV, safe and Soglio toiletries[5]. The own restaurant carries a Michelin Green Star for sustainability and the wood-fired bakery is on premises[6]. The walk to the Schauenstein dining room is "nearly 5 minutes"[7] — realistically 2–3 across the village square. Best fit for: anyone who wants the Caminada hospitality but isn't paying CHF 600+ to sleep in the castle.

Gasthaus Waldheim — village inn, shared bath, real bargain

6 rooms · from ~$119/night · Fürstenaubruck (lower part of the municipality) · ≈10–15 min walk

0.5 miles from the castle on the Domleschg-region road[10]. Six simply furnished rooms, each with TV and washbasin; ⚠ shower and WC are shared in the corridor[11]. Booking.com averages 8.1/10 over ~220 reviews; staff and breakfast are the recurring praise; ⚠ request a room away from the main road if noise-sensitive[12]. The on-site restaurant cooks Domleschg-regional country fare[12] — useful for a Friday-night arrival meal before the Saturday Schauenstein blowout. ⚠ Closed Wednesdays — phone ahead if arriving that day[11].

Gasthaus Post (Sils im Domleschg) — across the bridge

Several rooms (all private bath) · ≈20–25 min walk including the Rhine bridge crossing

Sils im Domleschg sits across the Hinterrhein from Fürstenaubruck; its official municipal hotel list contains exactly two entries — Gasthaus Post and the youth hostel[14]. Rooms are "comfortable, restrained, contemporary," all with private bath and a regional breakfast buffet[15]. Quirk worth knowing: the restaurant is rated #1 in Sils and is a Thai kitchen — a complete tonal break from the high-Alpine Caminada world[15]. No public rate list — call +41 81 651 12 49[14]. Best fit for: groups, families, or anyone who'd rather walk 20 min than pay CHF 260+ for proximity.

Drive-only honourable mentions

Beyond ~25 min on foot the geography fights you (Alpine elevation, river, dark country roads). After a tasting menu with pairings the rational move is a taxi, not a walk.

  • Landhus Almens — 1.3 mi from Fürstenau[13]; 5–6 family-run rooms with a praised farm-to-table restaurant[16]. Uphill — not walking-feasible at night.
  • Hotel Reich — 0.82 mi from Fürstenau (in Summaprada/Cazis direction)[13]. Doable in daylight, awkward after dinner.

Booking and timing notes

  • Schauenstein takes both restaurant and hotel reservations up to 8 months ahead[17] — a Saturday-anchored weekend in season needs ~6 months of lead.
  • If the Schauenstein dining table is booked but you still want Caminada proximity, Casa Caminada is the explicit fallback — book the table at Schauenstein from a Casa Caminada room and walk over[6].
  • All Caminada-run rooms include breakfast[1][5] — don't double-book a Sunday-morning café.
  • Schauenstein the hotel runs Wed PM → Mon noon[1]; a Saturday-dinner-with-Sunday-departure pattern works for every option on this page.
