Decision. If you only do one thing → drive to Lalouvesc (14 min east) for the Sunday market, basilica and an easy ridge walk [57] [48]. If you have a full day Saturday → loop east to Annonay for the Musée des Papeteries Canson & Montgolfier and Safari de Peaugres (40 min each way) [20] [30]. If history is the hook → 18 min to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and the Lieu de Mémoire (only French commune collectively named Yad Vashem Righteous Among the Nations) [19] [27]. Sunday morning before departure → the Velay Express heritage train from Tence (Sundays only May–Jun, both steam and diesel) [31].
Where is Marcon?
Restaurant Régis et Jacques Marcon (3 ★ Michelin) sits in Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid (1130 m, Haute-Loire) on the Haute-Loire / Ardèche border, in the Plateau Vivarais-Lignon [62]. Mountain D-roads in every direction; Google-Maps drive times are generally honest but pad 10–15 % for traffic on the D9 / D532 in summer. May is statistically the wettest month here (~14 rainy days, oceanic Cfb climate) — pack a shell and warm layers, the village is at altitude [63].

Drive times sourced from verymap, l-itineraire and distance-voiture trip calculators [27] [30] [57] [58] [59] [56]. Strictly inside the 30 km radius: Devesset, Mont Chiniac, Lalouvesc, Le Chambon, Tence, the Lignon gorges. Just outside but routinely included as regional day-trips: Yssingeaux (~32 km), Annonay (~28 km but Peaugres ~36 km), Mont Gerbier (~37 km), Mont Mézenc (~50 km via Saint-Agrève / Col de la Croix de Peccata [12]).
Outdoor & nature
Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc — source of the Loire ⚠ slick in rain
A 1551 m volcanic plug, ~37 km / ~1 h south by D-roads via Saint-Agrève [2] [59]. Summit climb is 1.2 km but steep — count 1h30 round trip [1]. Pair with the easy 3 km Sentier des Sources de la Loire at the base [1]. The stones turn slippery and dangerous in rain or storm — skip if the weather turns [2]. Best late spring after snowmelt [2].
Mont Mézenc — highest summit of the Ardèche ⚠ check for late snow
1753 m (south summit), with a 360° panorama from the Alps to the Puy de Dôme on a clear day [4]. Standard route: 2 h round trip from the Croix des Boutières car park [4], or the slightly longer 6.4 km / +260 m loop from Croix de Peccata (~2h35, moderate) [3]. Drive is ~50 min via Saint-Agrève and Col de la Croix de Peccata (1570 m) [12]. The summit road is not winter-cleared and snow patches can hold into May [65] — Les Estables doubles as a small ski station [14]. Mézenc is the strongest “wow” hike at the radius edge — go on a clear day, otherwise it’s just cloud.
Lac de Devesset — closest swim & loop
51 ha reservoir at 1074 m on the Vivarais plateau, 10 min east [6]. Flat 3.5 km loop, family-friendly on foot or by bike [5]. Supervised swimming is July–August only (lifeguarded 13h30–18h30) — in late May the water is genuinely cold [5]. Vehicle access is free outside summer peak (paid €5 for cars on the last two weekends of June and through July/August) [33].
Mont Chiniac — easy belvédère above Saint-Agrève
1116 m, accessed by the Chante-coucou loop: 6 km / +123 m through the Forêt de la Rèche, ending on a circular orientation table over the Velay and Boutières [7] [8]. The right answer when the cloud is too low for Mézenc but you still want a panorama.
Lignon gorges & plateau hikes
The Lignon between Tence and Le Chambon offers ~240 km of marked PR trails over 24 loops, from the easy 4.9 km Pèlerins circuit to the harder PR033 Lizieux (15.5 km) and PR040 Roche druidique (12.8 km) [10]. Viewpoints at Moulin de Boyer, Sauron, Beaujeu, Pont de Mars and Pont de Salettes [9]. The Passerelle Himalayenne (268 m, 78 m above the Lignon) sits in the lower Lignon near Grazac — ~45 km from Marcon, just outside the radius, but a worthwhile detour if heading toward Le Puy [15].
Lalouvesc — village walks at 1100 m
At the junction of the GR420 and GR430, with 22+ marked walks; the Tour du Mont Chaix (6 km / ~2 h) is the standard family loop with views toward the Alps [13] [60].
Mont Pilat foothills — out of range
The Crêt de l’Oeillon (1364 m), the second-highest summit of the Pilat, sits ~50 km north — beyond easy day-trip range, mentioned only to set expectations [11].
History, memory & museums
Le Chambon-sur-Lignon — Lieu de Mémoire
20.4 km / 18 min west by road [27]. The plateau around Le Chambon (population then ~24,000) sheltered an estimated 3,000–3,500 Jews from 1940 to 1944 under Pastor André Trocmé [18]. In 1990 Yad Vashem unveiled a plaque collectively honouring Le Chambon and the neighbouring communes as Righteous Among the Nations [19] — the only French commune to hold the title collectively [62].
The Lieu de Mémoire (23 route du Mazet) opens daily except Monday 10h–12h30 / 14h–18h from 2 May to 30 Sep; full €5, €7 during temporary exhibitions, reduced €3 [16]. For the 2026 spring window, the temporary show La fin de la Shoah 1944–1948 runs through 31 May 2026 [17] — if you are visiting before 31 May, this is the single best non-meal activity in 30 km.
Annonay & Davézieux — Montgolfier paper mill
The Musée des Papeteries Canson & Montgolfier sits in the birth house of the Montgolfier brothers, with live 17th–21st-century paper-making demonstrations [61]. Open Wed & Sun 14h30–18h year-round, daily 14h15–18h in July–August; €6.50 adult, €5 child 6–16 [20]. For a Saturday visit, note Wed/Sun only in May — if travelling Saturday, swap to a Sunday afternoon visit.
Lalouvesc — basilica & Musée Saint-Régis
Basilique Saint-Régis (built 1865–1877) houses the relics of Jesuit Jean-François Régis and, since 2018, Sainte Thérèse Couderc [22]. Across the square, the Musée Saint-Régis is open daily 30 March – 9 November 2026 with free admission; the centrepiece is a 19-scene Georges Serraz diorama of the saint’s life [21].
Yssingeaux — fortified Hôtel de Ville & ENSP
The Hôtel de Ville on Place du Général-de-Gaulle is a 15th-century fortified summer residence built by Jean de Bourbon, bishop of Le Puy — guided tours only [24]. The 19th-century Château de Montbarnier now houses the École Nationale Supérieure de la Pâtisserie (founded 1984 by Yves Thuriès and Alain Ducasse) — the building is visible from outside, but the school doesn’t run regular public tours [23].
Retournac — Château d’Artias
A medieval ruin on a pyramidal rock with eco-museum, botanical garden and bailiff’s house. Free access, ~1h30 [25]. Worth the detour if you’re already on the Yssingeaux side; otherwise skip.
Tence — Pénitents Blancs chapel & pharmacy museum
Both museums open July & August (Wed–Sat / Thursday respectively), shut in May — outside the season, Tence is a stop for the village fabric and the steam train, not the museums [26].
Family & leisure
Safari de Peaugres ⭐ marquee day out
36 km / 40 min east — just outside the 30 km radius but the region’s single biggest family destination [30]. 80 ha, 1,200 animals, 5 km drive-through circuit (~1 h) plus a minimum 3 h walking section [28]. 2026 prices: €29.90 adult (11+), €25.50 child (3–10), free under 3 [28]. Open daily April–September 10h–18h30 (9h30–19h in July/August) [29]. Plan a 4–5 h on-site commitment.
Velay Express — heritage train from Tence
The 1920s “Galoche” line, restored as a tourist railway with both steam and diesel rolling stock [32]. 2026 schedule: Sundays + May public holidays from May to October, plus Wednesdays and Thursdays from 16 July to 31 August [31]. Route: Raucoules → Tence → Le Chambon-sur-Lignon → Saint-Agrève; the former Dunières spur has been closed since 2015 [64]. Tickets €16.50–€22.50 adult, €13.50–€19.50 child 4–12, family-of-four packs €54–€78 [32]. ⚠ The official schedule page lists days but not specific May/June departure times — call +33 4 71 59 68 06 or download the PDF before driving to Tence.
Parcours Acrobatique des Sucs (Yssingeaux)
Four colour-graded courses (yellow from age 3, red from age 10), with two tyroliennes (ziplines) and a bungy-ejection feature [34]. Open 30 April – 20 September 2026, daily 10h–18h30, by reservation [35]. €7 / €15 / €20 by age band [34]. 29 min drive.
Les Marraignes — asinerie at Saint-Agrève
Free farm visits (donations welcome) and donkey-accompanied walks from €15; one packed donkey covers 3–4 adults for a full day, with 30 min of briefing before departure [38]. School-holiday slots Tue–Thu 10h–11h30 and Fri 16h30–18h, capacity 50 — book ahead [37].
NaturaLoisirs — e-bikes in Saint-Bonnet itself
9 rue du Velay, in the village. Giant electric and standard bike rentals, open Thu–Sun 10h–19h in spring (Wed–Sun in July–September) [36]. Useful for a Devesset loop without driving.
Gastronomy
The Marcon ecosystem — in the village
Beyond the gastronomic restaurant, the Maisons Marcon umbrella covers Bistrot la Coulemelle (Rue du Vivarais, 50 seats, Bib Gourmand, Thu–Mon, ⚠ seasonal break 17–25 June 2026) [40], Bar de Païs, La Chanterelle bakery, a Relais & Châteaux hotel, gîtes, Spa du Haut Plateau and a cooking school [41]. Cave (Vins) Marcon at 46 rue du Velay is open 7 days/week and pours their own artisanal verbena liqueur La Grande Verveine, distilled by Bérenger Mayoux at Solignac-sur-Loire from verbena grown in Jacques Marcon’s gardens [42] [43]. The Foire aux Champignons (Saint-Bonnet’s annual mushroom fair) is 7–8 November 2026 — irrelevant for May, but the village’s mushroom identity is year-round [44].
Weekend markets (closest first)
| Day | Market | Distance | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Lalouvesc | ~10 km | Closest Sunday market, 7h–13h, producers |

Cheese & producer AOPs
- Fourme de Montbrison AOP — 7 dairies (3 industrial, 4 farmhouse) across 33 Haut-Forez communes above 700 m, several open to visits year-round [50]. Fromagerie Artisanale des Hautes Chaumes at Sauvain is the noted artisan name (founded 1999, ex-Hervé Mons MOF input) — but Sauvain is in the Loire département, ~70 km away; for a 30 km visit, use the AOP body’s producer map to pick the nearest farm [51].
- Picodon AOP — goat-milk cheese from Ardèche/Drôme; the AOP producer map lists farms with direct sales [52].
- Lentille Verte du Puy AOP — first European pulse to win AOP (2008), grown 600–1200 m on volcanic soils across 87 Velay communes [53].
- Châtaigne d’Ardèche AOP — covers 118 Ardèche communes including Saint-Agrève; the Maison du Châtaignier at Saint-Pierreville is the visitor centre [54].
Saint-Joseph wine — at the radius edge
The Saint-Joseph AOC is anchored on Tournon-sur-Rhône — about 50 km / 52 min east [56]. The Doux river that rises in Saint-Bonnet flows down the Ardèche slopes to the Sainte-Épine lieu-dit, one of the appellation’s premier terroirs [55]. Out of strict radius — drop down only if you’ve already done the highland options.
Itineraries — anchored on Saturday-evening dinner at Marcon
Dinner at the gastronomic restaurant is an evening commitment with an aperitif slot before sitting — practical target: be back in the village by 17h–17h30 to shower and dress (confirm the exact time on your booking).
Saturday: half-day before dinner
Option A — Easy, weather-resilient: Lalouvesc loop. 14 min drive east [57]; coffee in the village, the Tour du Mont Chaix (6 km / 2 h) [13], basilica + Musée Saint-Régis [21], lunch on a terrace, back by 16h.
Option B — Big-hitter, clear day only: Mont Mézenc summit. Leave 9h00, ~50 min drive [12], 2 h round-trip from Croix des Boutières [4], picnic, back by 15h30. Check the Mézenc weather the night before — clouds kill the view [65].
Option C — History day: Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. 18 min drive [27], Lieu de Mémoire (2 h) [16], lunch in the village, short Lignon viewpoint loop [9], back by 16h. ⚠ Note Lieu de Mémoire closes Mondays.
Sunday: morning before departure
Option A — Lalouvesc Sunday market + Mass + departure. 7h00–13h00 market [48], basilica service if the timing fits. Easiest day.
Option B — Velay Express from Tence. Drive 15 min, take a Sunday departure (steam or diesel) Tence ↔ Saint-Agrève or Tence ↔ Le Chambon [31]. Call ahead for the exact 2026 departure time — schedule page lists days but not times. The most distinctive Sunday-morning experience in the area.
Option C — Devesset + Chiniac short loop. 10 min to Devesset for the 3.5 km lake circuit [5], or 15 min to the Chante-coucou belvédère [7]. Quick, low-commitment, weather-flexible.
Full-day Saturday or Sunday (if you have one)
East loop: Marcon → Annonay (Canson museum, Sun afternoon only in May [20]) → Safari de Peaugres (4–5 h) [28] → return. ~9 h door-to-door. Skip if you’re doing the gastronomic dinner the same evening.
South loop: Marcon → Mont Gerbier (1.2 km summit + 3 km Sentier des Sources) [1] → onward to Mont Mézenc via Les Estables / Croix des Boutières [4] → return via Saint-Agrève. ~7 h.
Caveats
- 30 km radius is generous. Several of the strongest options (Peaugres, Mézenc, Gerbier, Saint-Joseph) sit just outside. Inside the strict radius the highlights are Lalouvesc, Le Chambon, Devesset, Tence, Saint-Agrève, the Lignon gorges, and the village of Saint-Bonnet itself.
- May weather. Wettest month of the year [63]; summit cloud is common. Plan a Plan-B that doesn’t depend on a panorama (Le Chambon, museum, Cave Marcon).
- Drive-time padding. Calculator drive times assume you keep moving on D-roads. Pad 10–15% in practice, more after a slow tractor.
- Sunday closures. Several museums (Tence pharmacy, Yssingeaux Hôtel de Ville interior) operate only July–August or by appointment — the Lieu de Mémoire and Musée Saint-Régis are the reliable open-on-Sunday museums in May/June.
- Velay Express. Call +33 4 71 59 68 06 for May–June 2026 departure times — not published online.
- Reservation timing. If you want to combine Marcon dinner with Bistrot la Coulemelle lunch, note Coulemelle’s Tue/Wed closure and 17–25 June 2026 break [40].
