A Saturday in Staro Selo.

The restaurant is the schedule. Every other decision — bed, road, gorge, taxi — collapses out of one fixed window: Hiša Franko's 20:00 last seating on a weekend that does not exist between January and mid-February[2].

20:00

The restaurant is the schedule. Dinner runs three to four hours; the last seating is at 20:00; the menu is the only act. Build outwards.

One fixed point, fifteen hours of choices.

Time is allotted not measured. The orange band is the unbreakable buffer — shower, dress, breathe — and the turquoise stamp is the only block that cannot move.

Sand · Activity
Two slots, both elective: a four-hour morning anchor and a short afternoon stop. The 30 km radius gives every option a ≤45 min drive home.
Amber · Buffer
Non-negotiable. Two hours between the last activity and the taxi pickup absorbs every roadworks, gravel-bar swim and mountain-light overrun the morning can produce.
Stone · Transit
Door-to-door taxi from anywhere in the valley with VisitSoča's ferry service, or a 5-min walk if you're at Apartment Žonir[15].
Soča · Anchor
3.5 hours at table. The tasting menu, served Wed–Sun only, is the one block on this spine that the rest of the day must obey[1].
⌛ why the buffer exists
Slovenian alpine roads do not punish punctuality; they punish optimism. A rafting outfitter that says "back at 16:30" means "you start changing at 16:30." Allow two hours, not one — and remember the lime-tree avenue between Kobarid and Staro Selo is unlit, so an after-dark walk back is not an option[8].
— Where you sleep — Three tiers, one gate

Lodging is a binary problem with three answers.

Either you sleep on the lane (two beds), within a taxi ride (eight character stays), or you accept that "near" the restaurant means thirty-five minutes on foot in the dark.

Tier I · On foot

Two beds. One lane.

Staro Selo's single lane — pop. ~150 — has exactly two addresses that qualify.

Hiša Franko rooms · Staro selo 1
28 beds · dining guests only · 1 night cap[4]
Apartment Žonir · Staro selo 57
5-min walk same lane · VisitSoča-operated[5]
The on-site room is the booking that gates everything.
Tier II · Taxi back

Eight rooms with character.

Anything past the lane needs a taxi — but the village stays double as trailheads.

Nebesa Chalets · Livek, 1000 m
2025 MICHELIN Key · Roš-family property[14]
Tourist Farm Žvanč · Drežniške Ravne
Foot of Mt Krn[10]
Kozjak waterfall trailhead[11]
Above the Soča river[12]
— and four more across the lodging dossier.
Tier III · Walking myth

Don't walk it.

Tripadvisor's "near Hiša Franko" list opens at 3.2 km. That's 35–55 minutes on an unlit country lane.

3.2 km — closest listed hotel
35–55 min on foot[7]
The Drevored — lime-tree avenue
Unlit · no pavement at night[8]
VisitSoča taxi
Ferries diners from anywhere in the valley[15]
Anything not on the lane: book the taxi, not the trainers.
— Saturday's two picks — Inside 30 km

One morning. One short stop.

The buffer ends two activities. Pick a four-hour morning anchor and a sub-90-minute afternoon visit — anything else collides with the 17:00 wall.

— The order matters — Concierge ladder

Five steps, in this order.

The booking ladder

  1. Step oneSubmit the dinner request — and the room request — in the same submission. The room isn't auto-confirmed; you'll get an email[4]. Every later step depends on that email. Avoid early January through mid-February[2].
  2. Step two · waitIf the room is confirmed: book one fallback character stay for the second night (the on-site cap is one)[9]. The on-site rooms are intentionally TV-less, so a hybrid two-night plan is the natural shape.
  3. Step two · branchIf the room is declined: lock Apartment Žonir across the lane immediately. It's the only other walking-distance bed[5]. If Žonir is full too, jump to Tier II and book VisitSoča's taxi in the same conversation[15].
  4. Step threePin Saturday's morning anchor — rafting and Mangart need slots. Tolmin Gorges and Slap Kozjak are walk-up.
  5. Step fourSketch Sunday morning as a checkout-by-11 plan: one short walk from wherever you slept (every Tier II bed is at a trailhead).

Ruled out · filed for the record

A late-winter weekend (Jan–mid-Feb)
Hiša Franko's seasonal pause vacates the whole proposition; the restaurant is the schedule and there is no schedule until 14 February[2].
Walking from "near" hotels to the table
Nearest non-lane lodging is 3.2 km on an unlit lime-tree avenue[7][8]. 35–55 minutes in tasting-menu shoes; book the taxi.
Adding a tech-conference angle to the weekend
No developer conferences inside the 30 km radius in 2026[16]. The valley is a leisure radius, not a workation radius — nearest CFP-driven events are 60+ km in Nova Gorica and Ljubljana.
Two morning activities
A second four-hour anchor pushes the afternoon stop past 17:00. The buffer wins every collision.
