TL;DR. Hiša Franko sits 3 km west of Kobarid[55], with essentially every Upper Soča attraction inside 30 km. Saturday dinner runs 19:00–23:00, last reservation 20:00[88] — plan one morning activity, one short afternoon stop, be back in the room by 17:00.
Pick by half-day: Morning workhorse → Tolmin Gorges (1.5–2 h loop, the lowest entry into Triglav National Park)[5][4]. Afternoon walk → Slap Kozjak (45-min flat walk from town, €5, Apr–Oct)[2][3]. History → Kobarid Museum + Italian Charnel House (€8 + free)[22][24]. Adrenaline → half-day Soča rafting from Bovec (€59–62)[34]. Big-view drive → Mangart Saddle, Slovenia's highest road at 2,055 m, €10 toll, May–Nov[12][13].
Avoid: winter weekends (Hiša Franko closes Jan–early Feb[89], Mangart and Vršič roads shut[18][94], Tolmin Gorges closed[91]). Goriška Brda wineries are out of radius at ~48 km[85] — keep them for a separate trip.
Saturday timing rules
The Saturday window is fixed by the restaurant, not the weather. Hiša Franko serves Wed–Sun, lunch 12:00–16:00 (last seating 13:00) and dinner 19:00–23:00 (last seating 20:00)[88]. Skip the lunch slot on dinner-day; the tasting menu runs hours. The annual winter pause (recently early Jan → mid-Feb) rules out late-winter weekends entirely[89].
| Window | Best for | Realistic activities |
|---|---|---|
| Sat 09:00–13:00 | One serious half-day pick | Rafting[95], kayak intro[96], canyoning[38], Mangart drive[56], Krn lake hike[15] |
| Sat 14:00–17:00 | Short scenic add-on | Kozjak Waterfall[93], Šunik water grove[17], Italian Charnel House[24], Walk of Peace Centre[25] |
| Sat 17:00–19:00 | Hotel, shower, dress | Hard buffer — last reservation is 20:00[88] |
| Sun morning | Cross-border or longer hike | Cividale del Friuli (29 min drive)[62], Mt Stol[19], Kolovrat ridge[27] |
Waterfalls, gorges and easy nature walks
This is where the valley earns its reputation. All distances below are from Kobarid centre / Hiša Franko in Staro Selo, which sits at the Kobarid end of the radius[55].
Slap Kozjak (Kozjak Waterfall)
15 m fall inside a moss-walled cave-amphitheatre; trailhead at the historic Napoleon stone bridge[1][11]. AllTrails: 2.2 mi out-and-back, 456 ft gain, ~1 h 6 min round trip, moderate, best May–Sep[2]. Entry €5 adult / €3 under-15[3]. Visitable in winter at your own risk (free)[93].
Tolmin Gorges (Tolminska korita)
Lowest entry into Triglav National Park; loop past the Confluence, thermal spring, Bear's Head, Devil's Bridge and Dante's Cave[5]. Open Apr–Oct/early Nov; peak summer 08:00–19:00[91]. €8 (Mar–May, Oct–Nov), €12 (Jun–Sep); under-6s and disabled €1[90][4]. Wheelchair access only as far as Devil's Bridge; not stroller-friendly[92].

Slap Boka
Slovenia's tallest waterfall at 136 m (106 m free fall + 30 m)[6]. Easy roadside viewpoint; the source route is a 3.5 h technical scramble. Flow strongest in spring melt and rainy autumn — summer can be a trickle[7].
Slap Virje

Slap Brinta + Gregorčičev

Krnsko jezero + Mt Krn
Slovenia's largest alpine glacial lake at 1,391 m; 400 m long, 17 m deep; swimming forbidden[14]. Standard route from Dom dr. Klementa Juga in Lepena: ~700 m gain, ~2 h up; Mt Krn summit (2,244 m) adds another ~3 h[15].
Mt Stol (1,673 m)
Highest peak on the longest Julian Alps ridge; sea-to-Alps panorama identified by the summit transmitter[19][65]. Multiple routes from Breginj or Kobarid via Veliki rob.
Drežnica + Krasji vrh
560 m plateau under Mt Krn, with the 1912 Sacred Heart church that survived WWI[66]. Drežniške Ravne sits next door[67]. The classic western view of Krn's wall is from here; the Krasji vrh loop (1,773 m) from Drežniške Ravne is 4–5 h, 9 km, with WWI ruins[20].
WWI / Isonzo Front — the densest cluster in Europe
This is the topic where Kobarid is irreplaceable. The 1917 Battle of Caporetto happened here, and the Walk of Peace Foundation curates an integrated network of museums, charnel houses, fortresses and open-air sites within ~30 km[25].

Scenic drives and viewpoints
Mangart Saddle road
12 km of asphalt climbing 980 m to 2,055 m via 5 rock-cut tunnels; built 1938[12]. Full route from Bovec is 23.9 km via Log pod Mangartom and Strmec na Predelu, single-lane with 23 % pitches and no edge protection in places[56]. Uphill traffic has priority on narrow sections[13].
Vršič Pass (start)
Slovenia's highest paved pass with 50 hairpins; 26 on the Trenta side, with cobblestone switchbacks for grip[18]. Allow ~2 h to drive over with stops. Closed in winter conditions, typically reopens late spring[94].
Predel/Predil Pass to Italy
Wider and lower than Vršič — Bovec → Strmec (14 km) → Predel (3 km) → Tarvisio (13 km); open all year, passing the Napoleonic-era stone lion monument[57].
Kolovrat panoramic ridge road
Idrsko → Livek → Livške Ravne to the 1,115 m ridge straddling the Slovenia–Italy border[58]. Views to the Veneto plain[59].
Robidišče (westernmost village)
Slovenia's westernmost settlement, Venetian-Slovenian stone-and-gank architecture on the Nadiža river[60]. Springboard into the Breginjski Kot's 13 villages and gravity bike routes into Italian Benečija[61].
Cividale del Friuli + Nadiža/Natisone valley
cross-border Cividale (UNESCO since 2011) via the Stupizza/Robič border[62]: Lombard Tempietto, Piazza del Duomo, Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Christian Museum[63]. Drive via the Nadiža/Natisone valley, through Pulfero and San Pietro al Natisone[64].
Bovec town
Small main square with a brewpub on it — Slap Boka is "along the main road just outside Bovec centre" and Slap Virje is within walking or biking distance of the centre[68]. Natural pre- or post-rafting stop.
Most na Soči lake
5 km south of Tolmin at the Soča–Idrijca confluence; lakeside paths, the St Mary's church viewpoint, the archaeological museum, and SUP/kayak rentals on the water[69].
Food, cheese, wine and artisan stops
The Soča Valley sells dairy and meat, not wine — the headline grape regions (Goriška Brda, Vipava) sit beyond the 30 km radius[85]. Inside the radius the artisan offering is dense.
Mlekarna Planika + Cheese Museum
The 100 %-farmer-owned regional dairy, sourcing milk from 120–130 farms across Tolmin, Kobarid, Bovec, Kanal, Nova Gorica, Cerkno and Idrija[74], and one of only two certified Tolminc PDO producers[76]. Shop sells Tolminc PDO, sheep cheese, honey and local meats; hours seasonal (Apr–May Mon–Fri 7–19, Sat 7–14; Jul–Aug Mon–Sat 7–20; closed Sundays)[72]. The on-site "Od planine do Planike" Cheese Museum runs guided tours Mon–Sat by booking, ~45 min plain / 60 min with tasting, €6 / €4 (notify ≥3 working days ahead for tasting)[73].
Sirarska pot (Cheese Trail)
Brochure+map of Posočje mountain dairies[75]. The other certified Tolminc PDO makers: Lovrč and Kumr farms in Čadrg (~15 km) and Gugala dairy in Zatolmin near Tolmin Gorges[76].
Tourist Farm Jelinčič (Bovški sir)
110 indigenous Bovec "trentarka" sheep, cheese/ricotta/curd demonstrations and tastings; rooms and small camp too[77]. Bovški sir has PDO status since 2004 — dry-salted or brined sheep cheese aged ≥2 months[78].
"Say Cheese" guided day
Two cheese-maker stops in Bovec/Kobarid + Cheese Museum + frika lunch, min 2 people[79]. Aqua Tours Bovec runs a parallel sheep-breeding/cheese excursion with cellar visit and whey/curd/yoghurt tasting[87].
Thirsty River Brewing
Microbrewery and taproom on Bovec main square; ales plus a Thirsty River Liquor line — gin, young whiskey, vodka, coffee liqueur. Brewery tours by prior arrangement[84].
Jestival Food & Art Festival
Soča Valley restaurants, mountain-pasture cheese, Kobariški štruklji, honey and salami producers all on one square[83]. If your Hiša Franko booking lines up with the first October Saturday, this is your daytime program.
Apitherapy & honey wellness
Apitherapy and honey-massage experiences with overnight "in the company of bees" stays available in Kobarid itself[86].

Out-of-radius (don't try to squeeze in)
Goriška Brda's wine capital Dobrovo is ~48 km / 45 min from Kobarid[85] — Movia, Marjan Simčič, Klinec and Klet Brda are all outside the 30 km radius; treat them as a separate full-day excursion, not a "while we're there". Vipava Valley sits further south-east, also outside the radius. Friuli's Collio wine zone is just over the border but again past 30 km. If wine matters, build it into a different day of the weekend.
