TL;DR / Decision. Slagmolen sits inside Belgium’s only national park, so a 30 km arc covers an unusually dense slice of Flanders. Pick one and book the rest around dinner: – Nature day: Mechelse Heide + the 294 m Fietsen door de Heide heath-bridge [2][11]. – Culture day: Bokrijk open-air museum + C-Mine Expeditie in Genk [27][28]. – Family day: Plopsa Indoor Hasselt then Kelchterhoef lake [41][44]. – Soft day before dinner: Maasmechelen Village outlet + Elaisa wellness at Terhills [60][77].
Where you are
Slagmolen is on the Bosbeek in Opglabbeek (Oudsbergen), in eastern Belgian Limburg. The mill itself is a 1511-mentioned undershot oil watermill, restored in 1685 and protected since 1995 — the restaurant is the period building, not a recreation [39]. A 30 km arc reaches every Hoge Kempen gateway, all three Limburg cycle-through bridges, Maaseik in the north, Hasselt on the western edge and Lanaken on the southern. Things that just miss the radius: Lommelse Sahara (~44 km) [59] and Thermae 2000 in Dutch Valkenburg (~40-45 km) [84].

1. Hoge Kempen National Park — pick a gateway
The park has nine official gateways [1]; seven of them sit inside the 30 km arc. Each is themed — pick by mood, not just by closest pin.
| Gateway | Town | Theme / hook | Signature trail or feature | Visitor centre / hours | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mechelse Heide | Maasmechelen | Purple heath. “Nature speaks for itself” — no visitor lounge | 7 loops; 1.5 km wheelchair-accessible Zandloperpad; 104 m panorama point, views to Germany | Open dawn-to-dusk; large car park | h1, h2 |
| Terhills (Connecterra) | Maasmechelen | Main gateway, post-industrial. Climb three coal-era terrils | Green 3.6 km loop to Lange Terril — “most beautiful panorama in Flanders” | National Park Visitor Center on-site | h3 |
| Kattevennen | Genk | Stars and planets — gateway around the Cosmodrome | 6 hiking loops, 4 from the gate; mini-golf; planetarium €12 adult | Mon-Fri 09-17, Sun 13-17 year-round; Sat 13-17 Apr-Oct | h4, h5 |
| Station As | As | Industrial heritage. 31 m André Dumont derrick replica tower | Miniature 1,300 m narrow-gauge train, forest golf, disc golf | Visitor centre Tue-Sun 09:30-17:00, 1 Apr-8 Nov | h6 |
| Lieteberg | Zutendaal | Bees, insects, sand. Best gateway with younger kids | ~3 km Blotevoetenpad barefoot trail (16 Mar-2 Nov); 18 m tower; butterfly garden May-Sep | Free parking; trails sunrise-sunset | h8 |
| Thor Park | Genk | Former Waterschei colliery, 10 km² of slag heaps + heath | 10 loops incl. 2 km Steenmannetjespad; Lichtsporen light-art trail | André Dumontlaan 67 | h9 |
| Pietersheim | Lanaken | 12th-c. Waterburcht water castle on 76 ha former royal estate | 8 loops, 4 from gate; floating walkway for low-mobility visitors; petting zoo | Edge of the 30 km arc | h10 |
Wildlife. Year-round grazers — Norwegian Fjord horses, Konik horses, Angus cattle, donkeys — maintain landscape variation in the park itself; along the Maas in adjacent Rivierpark Maasvallei you see almost exclusively Galloways and Koniks creating mosaic open grassland [13].
When to come for the purple. Calluna heather blooms mid-August to mid-September; that’s the postcard window for Mechelse Heide [14].
On the doorstep. Duinengordel in Oudsbergen is a ~3,000 ha nature area, part of Hoge Kempen since 2020, with 82 km of marked trails across Oudsberg, Donderslag and Solterheide — no entry fee [56]. It contains the 12 ha Joekelbos, the country’s largest adventure-style play forest, stroller-accessible at Speeltuinstraat [57].
2. The three “Fietsen door…” bridges
Limburg built three signature elevated cycle structures in the last decade, all reachable inside 30 km via the province’s numbered-node bike network. They are the single most-photographed cycling thing in Flanders.
| Bridge | Where | Node | What it is | Opened | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fietsen door het Water | Bokrijk, Genk (Bokrijklaan 1) | 91 | >200 m, 3 m wide dyke path through a De Wijers pond; water at eye level on both sides | Apr 2016 | b1, b2 |
| Fietsen door de Bomen | Pijnven / Bosland, Hechtel-Eksel | 272 | 700 m double helix, 100 m diameter, climbs to 10 m above the pine canopy; wheelchair-OK | Jun 2019 | b3, b4 |
| Fietsen door de Heide | Mechelse Heide, Maasmechelen | 550-551 | 4 km route across 700 ha of heath, anchored by a ~300 m wooden panoramic bridge | Jul 2021 | b5, b6 |
How to ride them. Bikes (city, family, e-bike, tandem, mobility scooter) come from Fietsparadijs Limburg hubs at Bokrijk, Station As, Kattevennen, Hasselt, Houthalen-Helchteren, Lieteberg-Zutendaal and Pietersheim-Lanaken; 2026 rental runs daily 10:00-18:00 from 4 April to 8 November [21].
Suggested loops.
- From Bokrijk Castle parking, an accessible 6.3 km loop from junction 243 drops you onto the Fietsen door het Water span at node 91 [24].
- From the Pijnven parking, Bosland publishes 34 km and 62 km loops that take in the Fietsen door de Bomen helix [23].
- The Fietsen door de Heide bridge has no parking on-site — enter through any Hoge Kempen gateway (Terhills, Lieteberg, Station As, Kattevennen, Pietersheim) [11]. It drew ~15,000 cyclists in its first opening week so go early at weekends [20].
- One-day greedy combo: Fietsknooppunt.be publishes a stitched route that does Fietsen door het Water + Fietsen door de Heide in a single loop [22].

⚠ Two things that don’t exist near here despite frequent listing: Plopsaqua Hasselt (the Plopsaqua waterparks are only at De Panne and Hannut-Landen) and Klimcentrum Bleau (it’s in Ghent, not Genk).
5. Food, drink, shopping
Outlet & city shopping
Maasmechelen Village is the Bicester Collection’s only Belgian outlet — >100 designer boutiques with up to 60% off [61], open every day including Sunday 10:00-19:00 (closed only 25 Dec and 1 Jan), with 1,600+ free parking spaces [60][62]. For a small Belgian outlet centre the Sunday opening is a non-trivial weekend hook.
Jenever
Hasselt has been the centre of the Belgian jenever industry since the 17th century [63]; Hasseltse jenever carries protected geographical status. If your visit overlaps 17-18 October 2026 you’ll hit the Jeneverfeesten — the Borrelmanneke fountain on the Maastrichterstraat then dispenses jenever instead of water [64].
Wine
Wijndomein Aldeneyck in Maaseik (~20 km) farms 10 ha on the south-east-facing Meuse slopes — the biggest serious winery in range [65]. It has repeatedly been crowned Best Belgian Wine and won the Gault-Millau Belgian Wine Award 2023 for Riesling 2019 (white) and Charles Pinot Noir 2018 (red) [67]. Open tastings Fri-Sat 10:00-18:00, reservation recommended [66]. Smaller alternative on the radius edge: Wijngoed Pietershof, whose Chardonnay was once named Best Belgian Wine [68].
Beer
| Brewery | Town | Distance | Notable beers | Visits | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brouwerij Cornelissen (ex-Sint-Jozef) | Opitter (Bree) | ~15 km | King Mule IPA, Limburgse Witte, Bokkereyer, Herkenrode, Gummarus | Brewery tour + tasting bookable | be1, be2 |
| Achelse Kluis | Hamont-Achel | ~25 km | Achel Blond/Bruin — ⚠ lost Trappist status when the last monks left in 2021 | Guided visits Sat/Sun at 13:30 and 15:30 | be3, be4 |
⚠ Despite the marketing, Kempisch Vuur is not a Cornelissen beer — it’s brewed by Brouwerij Pirlot near Antwerp [76].
Alternative Michelin if Slagmolen falls through
Slagmolen is the marquee, but the 30 km arc holds three other Michelin-rated rooms — useful if you lose the booking or want a Sunday-lunch alternative.
| Restaurant | Town | Michelin | Chef / style | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cuchara | Lommel | ⭐⭐ Two Stars (2026) | Jan Tournier — modern w/ Asian notes | m1 |
| Innesto | Zonhoven | ⭐ One Star (2025) | Koen Verjans — modern, open kitchen | m2 |
| Ogst | Hasselt | ⭐ One Star | Sébastien Wygaerts — modern French | m3 |
6. Wellness & relaxation
| Venue | Town | Day price | Hours | What’s distinct | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elaisa Energetic Wellness | Maasmechelen (Terhills) | weekday €65 / weekend €69; evening from 17:00 €49/53 | Daily 10:00-22:00 | 11 saunas incl. Temazcal, Chakra and ceremonial cabins; 8 baths incl. outdoor whirlpools and Kneipp bath; discrete-nude, swimwear on Wed/Thu, 1st Sat, 3rd Sun | w1, w2 |

| Kajak Maasland | Lanaken/Maasmechelen | from ~€25 / person (13 km 2.5-5h, or 21 km route to Maaseik) | Daily 1 Apr - 31 Oct | Self-guided Maas kayak; ends near Maaseik (drive back) | w6 |
For quiet outdoor decompression there’s no need to pay: a Mechelse Heide loop in late August or the 2.5 km Beestige Multimovopad at Kelchterhoef both deliver a long afternoon for nothing [45][14].
⚠ Thermae 2000 in Dutch Valkenburg is often suggested but sits ~40-45 km from Slagmolen by road — beautiful, but it’s a half-day commitment, not a quick spa stop [84].
