Decision
Book the four rooms above the watermill itself if available — €245–325, zero taxi, dinner-and-bed in one address[2]. They are the obvious move and they sell out.
If full, taxi 5 km east to Hostellerie Vivendum — a 1736 chaplain's-residence with five rooms above its own 1★ kitchen[7][8]. For a designer B&B in Slagmolen's own village, Bed and Beyond; for a woodland cabin with a hot tub, Warredal.
Slagmolen sits at Molenweg 177, 3660 Opglabbeek — a watermill in the Bosbeek valley holding two Michelin stars[1]. "Taxi range" here means anything inside ~25 km / 25 minutes by road — Genk, Bree, Maaseik, Dilsen-Stokkem all qualify[23]. The eight stays below were picked for character rather than count of stars; routine 3★ business hotels are excluded on purpose.
| Stay | Town | From Slagmolen | Rooms | Why it qualifies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| De Slagmolen rooms | Opglabbeek | 0 km | 4 + villa | Sleep over the kitchen you just ate at |
| Bed and Beyond | Oudsbergen | ~3 km | 4 | Designer-host showroom B&B + private sauna |
| Hostellerie Vivendum | Dilsen-Stokkem | ~5 km | 5 | 1736 chaplain's residence, 1★ table |
| Hotel de Maretak | Oud-Dilsen | ~7 km | 6 | Maas-valley inn, private wellness, guests-only restaurant |
| Landhuisjes De Wouterbron | Opglabbeek | ~5 km | bungalows | Cottages in a nature reserve, swimming pond |
| Kasteel Wurfeld | Maaseik | ~15 km | 32 | Castle on 2.5 ha grounds, ⚠ uneven recent reviews |
| Warredal | Neeroeteren | ~15 km | ~37 | Cabins, treehouses, Hobbit House in Hoge Kempen woods |
| Carbon Hotel | Genk | ~15 km | n/a | Black-on-black design hotel, mining-heritage concept |
Sleep where you ate
De Slagmolen — four rooms + Scandi villa
Four luxury rooms over the restaurant plus chic Scandi-design guestrooms in the adjacent villa, conceived precisely so diners do not have to negotiate alcohol limits or a long drive home[2][3]. Rooms 1 & 3 are €245, rooms 2 & 4 (duplex) €275 — rising to €295 / €325 from 1 July. Phone booking only: +32 89 85 48 88[2]. Includes breakfast and minibar.
Hostellerie Vivendum — 1736 chaplain's residence
A chaplain's residence dating to 1736, converted into a one-Michelin-star hotel-restaurant whose terrace the guide singles out as one of Belgium's finest[7][8]. Five rooms (incl. one suite and one duplex loft); the catch is that rooms are sold only paired with dinner — so this is a "Sunday-night-after-Slagmolen" play, not a Saturday-night bed-only[7]. ViaMichelin clocks the Opglabbeek → Dilsen drive at ~5 km — a 7-minute taxi[9].
Design-led, intimate
Bed and Beyond — designer's showroom B&B
Run by Wendy and Tom — an interior designer — who built the four rooms "as a showroom so people can experience the designs," each with its own look[4][5]. Indoor plunge pool, sauna and sanarium are bookable as private wellness[6]. Tripadvisor: #1 of 1 B&Bs in Opglabbeek, 5/5[5]. Same postcode as Slagmolen → ~5-minute cab.
Carbon Hotel — coal-black design hotel
Sooty-black palette throughout, in tribute to Genk's coal-mining past — minimalist rooms with rain showers, a fifth-floor Carbon Sense City Spa (hamam, treatments) and Restaurant Gusto on-site[19][20]. Two minutes from Genk station, so feasible by train next morning rather than a return taxi[19].
Hotel de Maretak — small inn, private wellness
Six rooms with B&B charm but hotel standards, attached private wellness (sauna, jacuzzi, outdoor pool) and a refined restaurant accessible only to hotel guests — so a useful Sunday-lunch fallback if you over-indexed on Slagmolen the night before[10][11].
In the woods
Warredal — cabins & Hobbit House in Hoge Kempen
Around 37 cosy cabins, a Hobbit House and wellness lodges in woodland on the edge of Hoge Kempen National Park, with private saunas and hot tubs available; the park's stated principle is back-to-nature and there is no wifi[16][17]. Pricing from ~€115/night for a classic cabin; treetrunks-with-hot-tub list at €822 / 3 nights[18]. ⚠ Best as a 2–3 night base, not a single Saturday — the park is the point.
Landhuisjes Bij De Wouterbron — bungalows in a nature reserve
Secluded self-catering bungalows inside a nature reserve in Opglabbeek itself, with a seasonal outdoor swimming pond and walking/cycling trails on the doorstep[12]. Listed as official accommodation by Visit Limburg[13]. Each unit has its own bathroom, terrace and fully equipped kitchen — pitched at couples/groups who want privacy over hotel service.
Historic estate
Kasteel Wurfeld — castle hotel on 2.5 ha
A small castle hotel ranked #1 of 2 hotels in Maaseik, with 32 atmospheric rooms in landscaped grounds and the Wintergarden restaurant on-site[14][15]. ⚠ Tripadvisor average is a moderate 4.1/5 over 313 reviews and Jan–Feb 2025 stays flagged musty odours and inconsistent food — the building delivers, the operation is uneven[15].
Hotel Stiemerheide — English-cottage golf hotel
Late-80s build in the style of an English country cottage, 69 rooms, set on the 18th hole of Spiegelven Golf Club at the gateway of Hoge Kempen National Park[21]. Restaurant Moonstone under chef Koen Somers carries a Michelin Bib Gourmand — a useful Sunday-lunch option if you do not want to repeat fine dining[22]. The scale (69 rooms) makes this the least "boutique" of the set — included because the building's character genuinely is distinctive.
What we deliberately left out
La Butte aux Bois in Lanaken (5-star, 2★ La Source) and Hotel Van Eyck on Maaseik's central square are both excellent, but Lanaken sits ~30 km south and Van Eyck is a conventional 4★ on a market square — neither fits "character + taxi range" the way the eight above do. Anywhere ≥25 km starts to push a one-way cab past €50 and the value of staying near Slagmolen evaporates[23].
