A Saturday-dinner pilgrimage · Lommel, BE

An evening at Cuchara,
a weekend in Bosland.

What it actually takes to anchor a Limburg weekend on a Saturday tasting menu at Jan Tournier's two-Michelin-star kitchen — where to sleep, where to ride, and what the 30 km circle does and doesn't include.

The non-negotiable is the anchor itself. Cuchara sits at Lepelstraat 3, one block off Lommel's Hertog Janplein, on a pedestrian street so quiet you can hear cutlery from the open kitchen [1]. Two MICHELIN Stars in the 2026 Belgium guide; opened by Jan Tournier in 2009, in his grandparents' house; first star 2014, second 2019 [2]. Service Tue–Sat; arrivals at 18:30 or 19:00 sharp [1]. A tasting menu with pairings will land you back on Lepelstraat around 22:30 or 23:30, depending on the table.

This is why "walking distance" is a hard constraint and not a preference. A Saturday evening that ends with you fumbling for a Bolt app at midnight in a town of 35,000 is a Saturday evening planned badly. The reservation system books the table, not a room — they're two different phone calls — and the lodging map you choose now will, almost mechanically, decide which villages you spend Sunday in.

Two answers, both honest.

The walking-distance shortlist is short. Only Hotel Corbie at roughly 150 metres (and whose car park doubles as Cuchara's overflow lot) and Mi Casa Naranja, a 4.9★ boutique B&B four walking minutes away, qualify as honest walk-back-from-dinner stays [1][6][7]. Cuchara's two other "recommended" partners — B&B 't Wilgenhuys at ~2 km and Ars Vivendi at ~7 km — are taxi territory, no matter what the restaurant page implies [1].

"Pick Corbie and you walk home but sleep in dated rooms; pick Eikenhoef or Ars Vivendi and you swap walkability for a €13–24 taxi."

The character-lodging shortlist reframes the same question as a tradeoff. Eikenhoef — a 2023-built boutique on cycling junction 264/265, rated 9.4 by 275 Booking reviewers — gives you a forest-fringed Saturday morning at the cost of a Saturday-night cab [14][13]. Ars Vivendi trades modern hospitality for genuine historical romance: a 1904 engineer's villa in the heritage-listed garden city of Lommel-Werkplaatsen, ranked #1 special-lodging in Lommel, 5.0★ Travelers' Choice [11][24]. 't Wilgenhuys sits 25 metres from the cycling-junction network on the edge of the Lommelse Sahara — meaning you wake Sunday already inside the dunes [9][16].

Either way, before you book the room, save the number that Cuchara itself names: Taxi Flament, +32 475 86 53 10 [1]. Local rates run €4.90 base plus €1.90 per kilometre — a 5 km hop is about €13, a 10 km trip about €24, so every candidate stay sits comfortably under €25 one way [15].

The 30 km circle, sketched

An asymmetric radius.

Lommel sits awkwardly close to the Dutch border, which means the 30 km circle around Cuchara behaves nothing like a tidy region. It brushes Achelse Kluis on the abbey's terrace at 24 km north-east — the only Trappist brewery in the radius, and the only place the 5° Blond pours on draught [25][26]. It barely catches Eindhoven at the very edge — 30.2 km of road to the urban perimeter, 47 km to the centre [27].

And then it excludes almost all of Belgian Limburg's marquee attractions. Cycling Through the Trees at Pijnven is in — 12 km by bike, the only one of Limburg's "Fietsen door…" trio inside the radius. Cycling Through Water at Bokrijk is 44 km out; Cycling Through Heath in Hoge Kempen is 56 km out [19][20]. Hasselt and Genk — where Belgian Limburg's tech scene actually lives — fall 32–33 km out, just past the line [28][29].

Ann and Guido have welcomed guests since 2014; their art collection is, in one reviewer's phrase, why this "won't be an ordinary weekend away".[10][11]

A note on the season

White asparagus peaks mid-April through 24 June in this corner of Limburg.

Farm shops and seasonal menus on both sides of the border are stacked with it — including, plausibly, whatever Tournier puts on the tasting menu the night you sit down.[32]
