TL;DR / Decision. Inside 30 km of Cuchara (Lepelstraat 3, Lommel) [78] — Jan Tournier’s two-Michelin-star kitchen [76] [77] — you have one world-class outdoor act: Cycling Through the Trees at Pijnven, 12 km away [1]. Plus the Lommelse Sahara dunes + Reus van Bosland tower [15] [27], and the Achelse Kluis abbey-café on the Dutch border [39]. Cross-border: a quick 13 km hop to Bergeijk for the ‘t Spectrum design heritage [85] [73], or 19 km to Valkenswaard [84]. Honest skip-list: Cycling Through Water (Bokrijk, 44 km [5]), Hoge Kempen (56 km [25]), Hertog Jan Arcen brewery (80 km [81]), Adventure Parc Warredal (Maaseik 45 km [88]) and Beekse Bergen safari (54 km [75]). Eindhoven sits at the threshold — 30 km road to the southern edge, 47 km to the city centre [82] [83].
Cycling — the headline act
Cuchara sits inside Nationaal Park Bosland, the largest forest in Flanders, and at the centre of the Limburg fietsroutenetwerk — 1,800+ km of signposted routes connected by numbered knooppunten on eye-level blue signs, a system invented locally by mine engineer Hugo Bollen after the coal pits closed in the 1980s [7]. One travel blogger’s verdict on the bridge: “utterly wonderful” [13].
The “Fietsen door…” installations — only one is actually in range
| Installation | Location | Distance from Lommel | Length | Start node | In 30 km radius? |

| Cycling Through Trees | Pijnven, Hechtel-Eksel | 12 km [1] | 700 m bridge | 272 [2] | ✓ |

Cycling Through the Trees is the one you came for: a free double-circle bridge at Kiefhoekstraat 16, Hechtel-Eksel, climbing 3-4% over 700 m to 10 m height through the pine canopy, opened June 2019, accessible to bikes, walkers and wheelchairs, sunrise to sunset [2] [26]. Free parking on site.

Other riding worth doing
- Sahara child-friendly loop — 16.5 km paved with 15 m elevation gain, nodes 224-230-231-232-260-224 from Parking Soeverein, passing the House of Nature sculpture (7.5 m × 50 m), the Bocholt-Herentals canal pedestrian bridge, Blauwe Kei and the desert/blue lake [8].
- Mountainbikenetwerk Noord-Limburg — 270 km of signposted MTB across Bosland with five combinable Lommel loops (Kattenbos, Sahara, Heuvelse Heide) [9].
- BoslandBike 2026 — gravel/MTB festival Sun 26 April 2026 at Forestique (Witherendreef 1, Pelt). 100 km gravel/MTB €39.50, 10/25/50 km family routes €5 [10]. ⚠ For a 25 May visit the 2026 edition has already passed — flag for the 2027 calendar.
Walking — Sahara and the rest of Bosland
The Lommelse Sahara is the anchor: free entry at Speelpleinstraat 201, with an off-leash dog meadow, a willow-branch play forest, and the 30 m Reus van Bosland observation tower (144 steps, 25 km panorama, free, 24/7) [15] [27]. The tower is ranked #1 of 24 things to do in Lommel on TripAdvisor (4.6/5, 253 reviews) [27]. Bosland’s wandelnetwerk runs 70%+ on quiet sand tracks [16].
| Walk | Where | Length(s) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sahara red loop | Lommel | 11.7 km [14] | The full Bosland desert experience, ends at the tower |
| Sahara blue children’s trail | Lommel | 3.1 km [28] | Kids and play forest. ⚠ Sand → not stroller-friendly |
| In den Brand | Hechtel-Eksel | 2 / 4.4 / 5.5 km [19] | Largest sandpit in Flanders + 2-ha fenced off-leash dog park |
| Pijnven orange loop | Hechtel-Eksel | 6.6 km [20] | Easy pine-forest with treehouse + Butterfly Valley |
| Kattenbos heath loop | Lommel | 9.1 km [21] | Heather Aug-Sep, deer & badger sightings, starts at Leyssensmolen |
| Hageven-De Plateaux | Pelt (cross-border) | 1.38 → 9.69 km [18] | 600 ha border reserve; Hubert Lehaenpad wheelchair-accessible |
| Heuvelse Heide | Lommel | network | Prime heather bloom; parking De Meerpaal, Boskantstraat 60 [17] |
| Blekerheide | Lommel | network | Reached via steel canal footbridge; parking Lossingsweg [17] |
The 1797 Leyssensmolen wooden grain mill at the Kattenbos trailhead grinds again after a 1988 restoration; open free 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month, 13:00-17:00 [22]. For peak heather, target mid-August to mid-September [17] — a 25 May visit catches young growth but no bloom. Quirky add: Klankenbos in Pelt is an interactive sound-art forest with sculptures by European artists [23].

The Achelse Kluis is the cultural centrepiece of the radius. The abbey lost its Trappist designation in January 2021 when the last two monks moved to Westmalle; Belgian entrepreneur Jan Torman later bought the abbey and beer continues to be produced — just not labelled Trappist [56]. The monastery itself is closed, but the café-brasserie pours the abbey beers in a beautifully restored complex on the Dutch border [40] [74]. be-MINE Beringen sits right at the 26 km mark [45] and stacks a mining museum + underground simulation with the Todi diving centre, Alpamayo climbing wall and Adventure Mountain in one site [43].
Food, beer & farm-shop runs
Cuchara sits at two Michelin stars in the 2026 Belgium and Luxembourg guide [77] and 17.5/20 on Gault&Millau 2026 — the best in North Limburg by a clear margin [59]. If you want a second meal in the radius:
| Restaurant | Town | Chef | G&M 2026 | Style |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cuchara | Lommel | Jan Tournier | 17.5 [78] | Tasting menus (the anchor; ★★ Michelin [77]) |
| Cocotte | Lommel | Jan Mangelschots | 14.5 | Belgian-French-modern [60] |
| Food Emotions | Hamont-Achel | Mark Bonneu | 14.5 | Restaurant + gastronomic shop [62] |
| Stad10 | Hamont-Achel | Bert Brouwers | 14 | French base, Japanese accents [61] |
Beer pilgrimages:
- Achelse Kluis brasserie — closed Mondays; summer (1 Apr → 30 Nov) Tue-Thu 10:00-20:00, Fri-Sun 10:00-22:00, kitchen shuts an hour earlier [54]. The 5° Bruin and 5° Blond are draft-only here — the bottled product elsewhere is the 8° [55]. That makes the café a genuine “you can only drink this here” pour.
- Bocholter Brouwerijmuseum (Brouwerij Martens) — Europe’s largest brewery museum at 4,000 m², ends in a tasting room [57]. ⚠ Individual visits only July-August Wed/Fri 13:30, reservation required [50].
⚠ Note on Hertog Jan Brouwerij in Arcen (NL): often suggested as a Limburg beer day-trip, but it’s 79.7 km by road from Lommel — well outside the 30 km radius [81]. Don’t anchor a day around it from Cuchara.
Seasonal: late May falls in peak Limburg white asparagus (“white gold”, mid-April → 24 June), so farm shops and seasonal menus on both sides of the border feature it [65]. The Lommel weekly market sets up Wed 13:30-17:30 on Hertog Janplein — two blocks from Cuchara — and is the right place for local cheese and charcuterie before driving home [63].
Across the border — Dutch Brabant / NL Limburg
| Town | Road distance from Lommel | Headline |
|---|---|---|
| Bergeijk | 13.2 km [85] | Design pilgrimage: ‘t Spectrum (founded 1941; under Martin Visser from 1954, hired Friso Kramer + Constant Nieuwenhuys + Benno Premsela; the BR 02 sofa-bed) [73] |
| Valkenswaard | 19.4 km [84] | Eurocircuit — only permanent off-road race centre in NL; Belgian Rallycross R4 confirmed 20-21 June 2026 [79] [80] |
| Valkenswaard | 19.4 km [84] | Falconry & Cigar Museum Tue-Sat 13-17 [52] |
| Eindhoven | 30.2-47 km — borderline [82] [83] | Big-city culture if you push the radius |
| Weert | 32.4 km — just outside [86] | Sint-Martinuskerk late-Gothic hall church + IJzerenman lake [70] [72] |
Eindhoven, honestly. Rome2Rio puts the road distance at 30.2 km to where the route first enters the urban area [82]; Wanderlog returns 47 km for a centre-to-centre drive [83]. So Eindhoven city centre is just over a strict 30 km circle. If you’re willing to stretch slightly, the cluster is strong: Van Abbemuseum (modern/contemporary, Tue-Sun 11-17, €16, free Tue 15-17, under-13 free [46]), the Philips Museum on Gerard Philips’ 1891 light-bulb workshop [66] (Tue-Sun 11-17, €12.50/€6, free Tue 15:30 [67]), the reopened Evoluon — Next Nature Museum with the immersive RetroFuture exhibition across ten tunnels [48] (Wed-Sun 11-17, €16/€8 [67]), and the Strijp-S repurposed Philips factory zone — design studios, MU Hybrid Art House, Area 51 skatepark, food trucks [68].

| Adventure Parc Warredal (Maaseik) | 44.8 km [88] | Out |

A suggested 30 km weekend pivot (anchored on a Saturday-evening Cuchara dinner)
- Friday afternoon arrival — check in, walk the Sahara + climb Reus van Bosland before dinner [14] [27].
- Saturday daytime — ride the 38 km Cycling Through Trees loop from junction 272 [3], or rent bikes and take the gentler 16.2 km Komoot Butterfly Valley loop [11]. Lunch at the Achelse Kluis brasserie with a draft 5° Blond [54] [55].
- Saturday evening — Cuchara [76].
- Sunday — pick one: (a) be-MINE Beringen for the underground simulation + climbing/diving [44]; (b) Hageven-De Plateaux cross-border walk + lunch in Pelt [18]; (c) push the radius and do an Eindhoven half-day (Van Abbe + Philips, walkable in the centre) [46] [47]. Asparagus on every menu in late May [65].
