The 2026 Michelin Guide Nara lists 78 restaurants total: four at 2 stars, 18 at 1 star, and zero at 3 stars.[1] All four 2-star restaurants have held their ranking continuously since the first dedicated Nara guide in 2022.[2]
akordu
"Akordu" is Basque for "memories." Chef Kawashima sources 90% of ingredients from Nara, applying Spanish technique — YAMATO beef is the centerpiece, served across several preparations. Each table receives hand-written cards describing the seasonal menu in poetic style.[4] Vegetarian and gluten-free options available on request. No casual dress; minimum age 13; no strong perfumes.
Oryori Hanagaki
Chef Furuta visits markets each morning to select that day's best ingredients from across Japan — no fixed menu exists. He integrates vintage lacquerware and antique artworks into the service aesthetic. The restaurant is a bamboo-surrounded house.[5] Located in Gakuenminami, ~20 minutes by Kintetsu train from central Nara. Dietary accommodations available with prior notice.
Tsukumo
The name "tsukumo" means 99 — one short of the perfection of 100 — reflecting Chef Nishihara's philosophy. Monthly omakase themes draw on Nara's Silk Road heritage; dishes echo Shosoin treasure-house artifacts (e.g. a chirashi-zushi mirroring a bronze mirror design). The 12-seat restaurant opened in 2021 on Naramachi-dori in a purpose-built structure incorporating recycled temple roof tiles.[7]
NARA NIKON
"Nikon" means "this present moment" in Zen. Set in a renovated traditional townhouse with antiques and artworks; kimono-clad waitstaff and a sommelier. The menu highlights Uda Wagyu charcoal-grilled, rice from a traditional kamado stove, and seasonal accents — Japanese pepper in spring, matsutake mushrooms in autumn.[12] Tabelog Award Bronze winner; selected for "Tabelog 100" Japanese Cuisine West 2025.[10]
