TL;DR — Nara’s 2026 IT calendar is small but real: two peer-reviewed academic conferences at Nara Women’s University in October and December, plus a respected distributed-computing conference that ran in January (now past). If you are a practitioner looking for developer meetups, workshops, or industry expos, Osaka (40 min) and Kyoto (35 min) will serve you better. [16]

ICDCN 2026 — 27th International Conference on Distributed Computing and Networking (Past)
Jan 6–9, 2026 · Nara Kasugano International Forum IRAKA · ACM
Already concluded. The 27th edition drew researchers to a selective programme of 23 papers in six technical sessions. [3] Keynote speakers were Robert Tarjan (Princeton, Turing Award winner), Seth Gilbert (NUS), and Kaoru Ota (Tohoku/Muroran). [1] Proceedings are archived in the ACM ICPS. [2] The Nara Kasugano International Forum IRAKA — a dedicated venue with a Noh-theatre-style auditorium and simultaneous interpretation for up to four languages — hosted the event. [4]
Community Events
CoderDojo Nara / Ikoma
CoderDojo奈良/生駒/平群 runs free programming sessions on Saturdays at two Nara-area locations: [12]
- Ikoma (生駒) — Ikoma Citizens’ Activity Center ララポート, roughly monthly
- Nara City (大和西大寺) — Fushimi Community Center, roughly monthly
Sessions welcome children and adults, with participants bringing their own laptops. The club is part of the global CoderDojo non-profit network. The next listed event is CoderDojo Ikoma #96 on June 6, 2026. [13] Registration via connpass; seats are limited (21 spots per session).
⚠ Sessions are primarily in Japanese.
Nara as a Tech Research Location
NAIST (Nara Institute of Science and Technology), located in Ikoma, is a graduate-only national university with schools in Information Science, Biological Sciences, and Material Sciences. [14] [15] It is not primarily a conference-hosting institution for the public, but it is the research anchor behind Nara’s presence on the academic circuit — both WSSE and NLPIR involve NAIST-affiliated researchers and use Nara Women’s University as their venue.
Nearby Kansai Options
For developer conferences, workshops, and industry expos the Kansai region’s main hubs are Osaka and Kyoto — both under 45 minutes from Nara by express or rapid train.
| Event | Dates | City | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| World Congress of AI Industry 2026 | Jun 16–18, 2026 | Kyoto | Industry/research AI |
