A weekend in Villaverde de Pontones

A travel-journal itinerary, anchored on a Saturday-evening tasting menu at the three-Michelin-star Cenador de Amós — and built so you never need to drive after dinner.

The geometry

Cenador de Amós occupies an 18th-c. Casa-Palacio Mazarrasa on Plaza del Sol in a Cantabrian hamlet of a few hundred souls [1]. It holds three Michelin stars in the 2026 guide [2], and shares its plaza with exactly one lodging — Jardines Villaverde, the aparthotel literally across the gate [3].

Inside 30 km you get Santander, the Cabárceno wildlife park, two surf-reserve beaches, anchoa producers in Santoña, and the Pasiego village of Liérganes — none more than a half-hour drive.

Two days. One car. One unmissable dinner.

DAY 01Fri

Friday — arrival & a slow soak

Land at Santander airport (SDR) or roll in from Bilbao. Resist the urge to sightsee — you have two days. Today is the unwind day.

Afternoon15:00

Drive to Villaverde, drop the bags at Jardines Villaverde

Santander airport → Villaverde is ~20 minutes; Bilbao ~90. The aparthotel is on the same Plaza del Sol as the restaurant — Booking guest scores: 9.6 cleanliness, 9.8 location, 9.8 value across 471 reviews. The units come with kitchens, a saltwater pool, and a hot tub [3].

★ Only ~10 units. Book early. ★
Late afternoon16:30

Down to the Miera valley — Liérganes

One of Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España. 15 minutes south-east of the hamlet. Cross the 16th-c. Renaissance Puente Mayor (often mis-called "Roman"), photograph the Hombre Pez statue, find the cannon-decorated Casa de los Cañones, and read the local nickname for the twin hills above town on your own time [9].

Balneario de Liérganes
Balneario de Liérganes — sulphur waters since 1869

Soak: the four-century-old Balneario de Liérganes uses sulphurated mineral-medicinal water from the Santa Fuente spring, declared of public utility in 1869, in a 3-ha park of centenary trees [10]. Day-spa entry is the move; the lodging package is the other move.

Evening20:30

Dinner on the patio — keep it light

Eat a simple meal at the aparthotel or grab a tortilla and Albariño from a Santander pintxo bar (Casa Lita, ~€2.70/pincho [30]; La Bodega del Riojano for the Museo Redondo barrel-tops [29]). Save real hunger for tomorrow.

· Tonight: call the taxi company. Confirm Saturday 22:30 pick-up. ·
DAY 02Sat

Saturday — beach · city · the meal

A full day, but pace it. The tasting menu starts at 20:30. Eat little at lunch.

Morning09:00

Coffee, then Somo — Spain's first Natural Surf Reserve

Ten minutes from Villaverde. 8 km of dune-backed sweep [11]. Two-hour group lessons at Escuela Cántabra de Surf run €35 single / €70 for 2 days, gear included; beginners welcome from age 5 [23]. Not surfing? Walk the dunes from Somo to Loredo and back — about 90 minutes of soft sand and Cantabrian wind.

Midday12:30

Cross the bay by Los Reginas ferry

The cleanest no-car combination on the bay. €6.50 return, every 30 minutes, year-round, Somo → Pedreña → Santander [13]. Photograph from the open top deck.

park the car at Somo · pick it up on the way back · saves a city-parking headache
Afternoon13:30

Santander city — Centro Botín + the Magdalena

Centro Botín, Santander
Renzo Piano · Centro Botín

Renzo Piano's barnacle-on-stilts art centre on the bay. Until 6 Sep 2026: Yuko Mohri's Entanglements — €9 online, free under-18 [12]. Then walk the Magdalena Peninsula: Alfonso XIII's 1909 summer palace, the free public mini-zoo (seals fed ~13:00), the tourist train circling the headland every 15–20 min [21].

Late afternoon17:00

Back to the hamlet — rest, shower, dress

Ferry back to Somo, car back to Villaverde, twenty minutes in the saltwater pool, an hour with the curtains drawn. Cenador's tasting is a long meal. Show up rested.

DAY 03Sun

Sunday — anchoa · animals · go

A slow start. Then one good thing east, one good thing south — and home.

Morning10:30

To Santoña — Spain's anchovy capital

Santoña — anchoa and Monte Buciero
Santoña · the anchovy capital

25 minutes east, on the Asón mouth, ringed by the Santoña Marshes natural reserve [24]. Two no-friction factory visits:

⚠ Closed all summer 2026. The 763-stair descent to Faro del Caballo is shut for rockfall stabilisation — rocks ~20 m above the steps are not securely seated [14]. Substitute the 9.5 km Monte Buciero loop (~3 h, moderate) [27].
Midday13:30

Port lunch in Pedreña — Asador Itxaski

Grilled fish with bay views, daily fish-market supply. Or, if you're easting-out via Pedreña, the rustic Restaurante Marina across the dock for arroz con nécoras [28].

Afternoon15:30

One last good thing — Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno

Cabárceno wildlife park
Cabárceno · 750 ha · reclaimed iron mine

A 750-ha reclaimed open-pit iron mine, opened 1989, with 100+ species in semi-free-range enclosures: Cantabrian brown bears on 35 ha, the largest African elephant herd in captivity outside Africa, gorillas, tigers, lions, jaguars, and the daily birds-of-prey and sea-lion shows [19]. Plan 4½–5 hours minimum; the ticket includes the telecabina. 2026 adult tariff €25/35/45 by season [18].

· if the kids are toast: skip Cabárceno. Drive Sardinero, scoop ice cream, leave for the airport at 18:00. ·
Evening20:00

Go.

Santander airport is 20 minutes from Villaverde. Bilbao 90. Save the trip on the drive out, while the tasting menu still feels close.

Where to sleep

Walking distance to the gate, in order of friction. If everything inside 1 km is sold out, taxi range gets you back to a 17th-c. baroque palacio for under €10 each way at Santander's 2026 night tariff [5].

Reserve in this order

The geometry only holds if you book the right thing first.
  1. Dinner firstCall Cenador de Amós. Lock the Saturday. Confirm menu price, wine pairing, meal length, dress code.
  2. Room secondThe moment dinner is locked, book Jardines Villaverde. Only ~10 units — every diner wants this address.
  3. Surf schoolIf you want Saturday morning lessons, reserve Escuela Cántabra a week ahead.
  4. Taxi lastBook the post-dinner taxi at the start of the meal, not the end — rural Cantabria has thin late-night cab availability.
