IT conferences and tech events in Modena (2026)

Two windows are worth steering a Modena weekend to: Motor Valley Fest (May 28-31) and the DevFest → Smart Life Festival arc (Oct 3-18). Off-window weekends fall back to monthly meetups.

Decision. Two windows actually pull a tech-curious traveller to Modena: Motor Valley Fest, May 28-31 [1] (happening now — 200+ speakers on AI, software-defined vehicles, autonomous driving [2]) and the DevFest Modena → Smart Life Festival arc, Oct 3-18 [5] [8]. Off-window weekends fall back to monthly community meetups (GDG Cloud, Modena Full Stack, ML Modena) [9] [10] — fine for a casual evening, not worth re-anchoring a trip.

Headline events in 2026

The pickings are concentrated in two windows. The dev.events directory confirms only one dedicated IT conference is on Modena’s 2026 calendar (DevFest) [20], but the picture broadens once you include festivals, university events and Motor Valley.

Why Motor Valley Fest is the standout right now

You’re reading this on May 28 — opening day. The Thursday-night keynote at Teatro Storchi is “Global Trends, New Frontiers and Human Responsibility” [3], an unusually serious framing for a motorsport festival. Friday’s program is the tech-heavy day: tracks on software-defined vehicles, autonomous driving, connected mobility, space economy and virtual racing [1]. Confirmed presence from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Ducati, Pagani, Dallara and Accenture [2]. It is the 8th edition [4] and the closest Modena gets to a global tech-and-industry crossover event.

The October double-bill is the better fit if you have flexibility

DevFest Modena (Oct 3-4) and Smart Life Festival (Oct 15-18) are explicitly co-themed around “Intelligences” — natural, artificial, human [8]. DevFest is the warm-up: a community-organized two-day developer conference at Fondazione San Carlo with AI/Cloud/Web/WIT tracks, 600-800 attendees, 30-min sessions [6]. Smart Life is then four free days of public-facing talks, installations and panels across multiple city venues [7] — much broader audience, low signal density for a developer but high signal for design / ethics / society topics. Sandwich them with a weekend in between for the Michelin dinner.

Recurring monthly meetups

Worth checking the date if your weekend lands mid-week-adjacent. All free, all welcoming to drop-ins; most run in Italian with code/slides in English.

Group Frequency Typical venue Focus
GDG Cloud Modena (350 members) Monthly Laboratorio Aperto / partner venues GCP, BigQuery, Vertex AI, MLOps
Modena Full Stack (773 members, 4.8/5 on Meetup) Monthly OTTANTESIMO MIGLIO, via Emilia Ovest 802 Two short talks + drinks; full IT spectrum
Flutter Modena ~Monthly MakeIt Modena / Conoscere Linux Cross-platform Flutter, hands-on code labs
ML Modena Monthly UNIMORE Dept. of Mathematics, room M1.7 Applied ML, papers, hybrid w/ YouTube
Conoscere Linux (LUG) Frequent MakeIt Modena Open-source, Linux, hosts Linux Day
Reggio Emilia Full Stack (sister group, ~30 min by train) Monthly Reggio Emilia Same format as Modena Full Stack

The six groups above also collectively organize DevFest Modena [5] — so if you attend any of them in 2026, you’re meeting the same people who run the headline conference.

Venues to know

The Modena tech scene clusters around three buildings. Useful for orienting a walking-distance hotel:

  • Tecnopolo di Modena — UNIMORE research park; home of the new UniMORE AI Center (inaugurated March 13, 2026; 100+ AI researchers, AImageLab + ELLIS Modena + AIRI; de facto AI hub of Emilia-Romagna [16]). Hosts academic conferences like IRCDL [17]. Industrial-zone location, not walking distance from the centro storico.
  • Laboratorio Aperto Modena (ex-AEM power plant, restored) — coworking + 545 sqm event gallery, the city’s innovation hub. Hosts Smart Life Festival sessions, Indie SaaS Day, GDG Cloud meetups, Talk Together IT-community sessions [18] [19].
  • Fondazione San Carlo — historic theater and conference building; DevFest’s home venue [6], also a Smart Life Festival venue [7].
  • Teatro Storchi — Motor Valley Fest opening keynote venue [3].

Practical notes

  • Most events are in Italian, slides often English. Smart Life Festival in particular is largely Italian-language. DevFest historically has a mix.
  • Pair smartly with the Michelin dinner. Motor Valley Fest is Thu-Sun; the Friday tech day pairs naturally with a Saturday-night reservation in Modena. The October arc gives more weekend choices but both DevFest (Sat) and Smart Life Festival opening night (Thu Oct 15) work as anchor points.
  • Reggio Emilia is 25 minutes by train — worth noting if a meetup or restaurant pulls you there for a side trip [21].
  • Linux Day Oct 24 is a separate weekend from Smart Life — only worth it if open-source is your specific interest.
