TL;DR. Book schanz. hotel. — it’s the same building as the kitchen [5], so the taxi problem disappears. If those twelve gourmet-themed rooms are full [3], the next two character picks are Wein- und Tafelhaus in Trittenheim (7 rooms, fellow Michelin kitchen, ~8 km) [10] and Weinromantikhotel Richtershof in Mülheim (300-year winery, 16th-c. cellar, ~11 km) [13]. For a once-in-a-trip splurge, the riverbank castle Schloss Lieser is ~14 km [17].
Why “stay on site” is the default answer
schanz. restaurant. holds three Michelin stars at Bahnhofstraße 8a, Piesport [1][2]. The hotel sits in the same family-run building and was deliberately bolted on to the kitchen — Thomas Schanz opened the restaurant in 2011 next to a hotel run by his parents [6], and the official venue page literally pitches “leave your car after a hearty menu and wine enjoyment” [5].
Rural-Mosel taxi supply after 22:00 is thin, especially Sundays. Taxi Reitz in Bernkastel-Kues (the most visible operator, 06531-6455) lists office hours Mon–Fri 08:00–17:00 and only takes off-hours rides by direct phone arrangement [20]. The Piesport-local backup is Fahrdienst Später (06507 802313); Taxi Keusch in Neumagen-Dhron (06507 2493) is the other nearby option [21]. All three want pre-booking for evening returns — do not assume a curbside hail will work.

Tier is a rough rank, not a quote; concrete rates are shown only where a primary source publishes them. “See aggregator” → Booking.com / Hotels.com / direct enquiry, as those vary by season and party size. Distance is by road from Bahnhofstraße 8a — Bernkastel-Kues is 16.9 km / ~14 min, taxi ~€40–55 one-way [19], so a Bernkastel base is plausible but the late-night return becomes the trip’s single biggest logistics risk.
Notes per option
schanz. hotel. — Piesport, 0 km
Twelve rooms designed by tibo architects around five gourmet-product concepts — colour-coded, walk-in showers, sun terrace with illuminated water basin [3]. Doubles €186–198 with balcony, single-use €157–166, breakfast included [4]. The pick if it’s available — book ahead for Saturdays.
Weinhaus Piesporter Goldtröpfchen — Piesport, ~1 km
The Hain family’s wine hotel in the village centre, named after the famous vineyard. Wood panelling, calm, panoramic Mosel views; reviewers call it “traditional and contemporary” with attentive front-of-house from Frau Hain herself [7]. Walkable from the restaurant in dry weather — no taxi needed.
Other Piesport vintner stays — ~1–2 km
The village’s bookable inventory is otherwise working wineries: Ferienweingut Birkenhof, Lehnert-Veit, Breit, Gästehaus St. Eberhard, plus the riverside Hotel-Restaurant Moselblick just outside town [8]. Character is “stay in the winemaker’s house”; expect simpler furnishings than the hotels above. Taxi from these to Schanz is a sub-5-minute hop — still pre-book.
Weingut Koch — Neumagen-Dhron, ~5 km
Traditional Mosel winemaker’s house in Dhron, vineyard- and valley-facing apartments with full kitchens, on-site tennis and garden [9]. Neumagen-Dhron is Germany’s oldest wine town (Roman wine-ship monument); the village itself is a sight. ⚠ Local taxi (Keusch, 06507 2493) — pre-book return.
Wein- und Tafelhaus — Trittenheim, ~8 km
Seven rooms, all facing the Mosel and the Grand Cru Trittenheimer Apotheke vineyard; furniture custom-built by a local carpenter [10]. Chef Alexander Oos runs a Michelin-starred kitchen of his own [11], so you can do back-to-back fine-dining nights without changing hotels. The strongest “character” pick if Schanz’s hotel is full.
Moselhaus by Clüsserath-Wittmann — Trittenheim, ~8 km
A 2023-build of three modern vintner-owned apartments (87–102 m²): Steinreich €160–210, Apotheke €150–190, Lagenblick €140–170, all with full kitchens, EV charging, vineyard views [12]. Best fit for a couple-plus-friends or a family — less hotel-y, more “borrow a winemaker’s house.” The Wittmann wine list is the bonus.
Weinromantikhotel Richtershof — Mülheim/Mosel, ~11 km
Four-star superior Romantik Hotel inside a 300-year-old winery ensemble with a 16th-century vaulted cellar; rooms are named after vineyards, layered with Baroque, Wilhelminian and Art Nouveau detailing [13]. Inventory: 2 singles, 36 doubles, 5 suites [14]. Best mid-luxury option that still feels rooted in Mosel wine history.
Schloss Lieser, Autograph Collection — Lieser, ~14 km
Fully restored 19th-century castle on the riverbank, library, spa, in-house tasting room and vineyard, and the Puricelli fine-dining restaurant [17]. Marriott-flagged (Autograph), so points/elite-status apply [18]. The “trip-defining hotel” option — but you commit to a ~€40–55 each-way taxi on dinner night and must lock the return car in advance.
Hotel-Restaurant Doctor Weinstube — Bernkastel-Kues, ~17 km
1668 tithe house in Bernkastel’s old town, expanded into a hotel in 1974 and fully renovated in 2013; 25 doubles + 3 singles, rooms mix rustic timber with modern fittings, idyllic courtyard [15][16]. Pick this if you also want a Saturday-morning Bernkastel-Kues walk before driving back to Piesport for dinner — and use the same logic on taxi pre-booking.
Practical taxi playbook
- Pre-book the return when you book the table. State pick-up at “Restaurant Schanz, Bahnhofstraße 8a, Piesport” and the time you expect to leave (a Michelin tasting menu runs 3–4 h).
- Numbers worth having in your phone: Taxi Reitz Bernkastel 06531-6455 [20], Fahrdienst Später Piesport 06507 802313, Taxi Keusch Neumagen-Dhron 06507 2493 [21].
- Sundays and after 22:00: assume one operator, not three. The argument for staying at schanz. hotel. is exactly this — a 30-metre walk home.
- No Uber/Bolt in the Mosel villages. Don’t plan around them.
