Decision — Restaurant Ralf Berendsen (two Michelin stars, also listed on World’s 50 Best Discovery) is inside Domaine La Butte aux Bois at Paalsteenlaan 90, Neerharen [1] [8] [14]. The only sane “walking distance” choice is stay in the hotel itself — zero metres to your two-Michelin-star dinner, Relais & Châteaux / Small Luxury Hotels property [3] [7] [17], with the in-house Shiseido Spa Aquamarijn to recover in [8]. If La Butte’s ~$240–$400/night Saturday rate [5] is out of scope, Hotel Admiraal at Staatsbaan 81 (50.9110°N, 5.6812°E) [11] is a 1.1 km walk (~14 min) along the N78 [12] at roughly €85–90 [13]. Nothing else in Neerharen meets a fair definition of “walking distance” — the village is small and the restaurant sits at the entrance to Hoge Kempen National Park [2].

The two options

Option Walk to dinner Stars / rating Rooms Saturday rate (approx) Notes
Domaine La Butte aux Bois 0 m (same building) [1] 5★ · Relais & Châteaux · SLH · Tripadvisor 4.6/5 (795 rev), #1/3 in Lanaken [6] [7] [3] 62 [4] $241 low / $398 high (USD, Kayak) [5] Estate dates to 1924, rooms across Le Manoir / La Villa / La Forêt; Shiseido Spa Aquamarijn on-site; Le Ciel bistro for breakfast & lunch [2] [8]
Hotel Admiraal 1,124 m / ≈14 min along Paalsteenlaan → Staatsbaan (N78) [12] [15] 3★ family-run · Tripadvisor 3.5/5 (27 rev), #3/3 in Lanaken [10] 26 [9] $90+ (~€85) [13] Free breakfast buffet, sauna, hot tub; ⚠ no air-con and on a busy main road — ask for a back room [9] [10]

Why nothing else qualifies

Restaurant Ralf Berendsen sits at the western end of Paalsteenlaan, against the wooded edge of Hoge Kempen National Park [2]. Paalsteenlaan is a short side street off the N78 (called Steenweg / Staatsbaan locally) [15] — west of Paalsteenlaan is forest, east is residential Neerharen with no hotels until you reach the N78 itself. The nearest public-transport stop, Neerharen Dobbelsteynstraat, is ~400 m from La Butte [16], but no other accredited lodging clusters around it.

The next-closest accommodation that appears in B&B aggregators is Mimi’s natuurhuisje (Heidestraat 101 E73 — a 2-person nature cottage, 9.6/10 on bedandbreakfast.eu) [18]. Crow-flies it’s ~660 m from La Butte, but on foot the OSRM route is 3.7 km / ≈45 min because Heidestraat sits in a holiday bungalow park inside Hoge Kempen with no direct path to Paalsteenlaan. For “walking after a 2★ dinner in dress shoes” this fails the test — treat it as a short-drive option, not walking distance.

Practical notes for booking

  • Saturday-night Ralf Berendsen + La Butte room is the booking the hotel is built around — the gastronomic-stay packages on labutteauxbois.be bundle the dinner with the room and spa access [8]. If you want the dinner reservation guaranteed, book the package rather than treating room and table as separate inventories.
  • The 1.1 km walk from Hotel Admiraal traces a sidewalk along Staatsbaan, then turns west onto Paalsteenlaan — fine in daylight or after dark with a phone torch, but the N78 is a 70 km/h regional road [15], so dress-shoe walkers in rain may prefer a 5 min taxi.
  • Beyond walking distance but still ≤ 10 min by car: central Lanaken (4 km south) and Maastricht NL (5 km north-east) have far more lodging choice — only relevant if neither option above fits.

scout: OSRM foot routing was used in lieu of a Google Maps walking-distance check (Maps requires consent flow that 403’d via WebFetch); OSRM distance matches the road geometry and is reliable, but the OSRM duration field was unrealistic (171 s for 1.1 km) — the 14 min figure above uses a normal 5 km/h walking pace.
