The premise
Maison Colette sits at De Trannoyplein 17 in Tongerlo (Westerlo)[2], two Michelin stars since the 2025 guide — awarded just four months after opening[3]. Saturday dinner runs late, so you want a bed within a short, reliable taxi ride — local firm Taxi Westel runs evenings out of Verlorenkost 5[16]. The picks below are filtered to character (a building or story worth the stay), not just proximity. Distances measured from Tongerlo[19].
The shortlist
Maison Colette — guest roomsTOP PICK
Five rooms in the refurbished doctor's house above the restaurant, interiors by Grain Design Office[20]. Beka mattresses, Verilin linens, Bomat carpets[1]. Bookable only in combination with a dinner reservation, breakfast included, check-in 16:00–18:00[1]. The point of the topic — if you can get one, take it.
De Watermolen · Kasterlee
17th-century working watermill on the Kleine Nete[7]. Hotel rooms in the historic mill structure, brasserie + fine-dining Restaurant Terlo on site (Terlo only Fri–Sun)[7]. "Magnificent 17th-century water mill full of charm" per Booking guest copy[8]. ⚠ Restaurant Terlo unavailable Sat night → not double-booking-friendly, but rooms are.
Hotel Karmel · Herentals
Four-star hotel inside a converted Carmelite monastery on Grote Markt 39[6]. Parquet floors, vaulted dining room, original cross-topped stone tower above the courtyard. Indoor pool, sauna, hammam — the only spa option in the shortlist[6]. Closest "real hotel" with a story.
Het Wevershuis · Herentals
1880 neoclassical director's residence reopened as a B&B in April 2024 after a multi-generational Van Schoubroeck family restoration[9]. Family rooms, garden views, neoclassical hall, continental breakfast guests rave about[9]. Newest building on the list; quietest interior.
't Convent · Herentals
Three individually-designed rooms inside the medieval Begijnhof at Begijnhof 17 — a UNESCO-type beguinage setting in the centre of Herentals[10]. "Oasis of peace and comfort"; Booking Traveller Review Award winner[10]. Smallest, quietest, most courtyard-cobblestone of the lot.
Hotel Geerts · Westerlo
Grote Markt 50, building dates to 1728[5], family-run for four generations[4]. À-la-carte restaurant, garden, "earth-tone décor" — closest 4-star to Tongerlo Abbey (5 min drive)[5]. The pragmatic Westerlo choice when Maison Colette's own rooms are gone.
B&B De ZIL · Herselt
Three double rooms at Zillekespad 2, set in the forests of Landschapspark de Merode — same nature corridor that runs to Tongerlo Abbey[11]. Local-produce breakfast on the terrace in good weather[11]. Closest "wake up in the woods" option.
B&B Carpe Diem · Westerlo
Two named rooms — Gravin de Merode and Prins de Merode — on a quiet dead-end street, with a mezzanine breakfast room overlooking the River Nete[15]. Homemade local breakfast; on the official Westerlo tourism roster[14].
Hostel Boswachtershuis · Westerlo
The renovated former forester's house inside the Beeltjens nature reserve, run for 20 years by host Elly with a "gnomes and talking dolls" theme[12]. ⚠ Hostel format (bunks, shared facilities) — wrong vibe after a 2★ tasting menu for most, but if you're with a group or are charmed by whimsy and want the cheapest character option, here it is.

Notable exclusion: Tongerlo Abbey guesthouse
The 12th-century Tongerlo Abbey gastenkwartier — the most "character" lodging imaginable, literally next door to Maison Colette — does not work for a Saturday-dinner trip[13]. Rules: minimum 4-night stay, guests expected to join the liturgical prayer times, no pets, no en-suite for half the rooms, you bring your own towels, and bookings are by phone in narrow morning/afternoon windows[13]. Worth a future visit on its own terms — not a one-nighter.
One-room boutique B&B (mention)
If you want a single room steps from the Beeltjens forest and don't mind it being the only room in the house, B&B Wolf & Belle (Beeltjens B&B) has one twin/double with infrared cabin, garden opening directly onto the Beeltjensdreef walking area[17]. Solo couples only; no restaurant on-site.
