Gaming and media on Linux in 2026: singleplayer is solved, anti-cheat and DRM streaming are not

Roughly 90% of Windows Steam titles launch under Proton; the two real losses are kernel anti-cheat multiplayer (Call of Duty, Valorant, Battlefield 6) and browser DRM streaming above 720p SDR.

Verdict. Your singleplayer and co-op library is almost certainly fine — close to 90% of Windows titles on Steam launch under Proton, with ~10% “borked” [1]. The two things you actually give up are (a) competitive multiplayer with kernel-level anti-cheat — Call of Duty, Valorant, League of Legends, Battlefield 6, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege [2] [3] — and (b) Netflix/Prime/HBO in a browser above 720p SDR, permanently [4]. Distro choice barely affects either; it only affects how much you configure.

What is solved

Steam ships Proton and Proton Experimental as a per-title toggle; Proton 11 entered beta in April 2026 and Experimental gets game-specific fixes every few weeks [5]. Non-Steam stores are covered by two apps: Heroic natively handles Epic, GOG and Amazon Prime Gaming, but not Battle.net, EA or Ubisoft — those need a nested launcher [6]. Lutris is the one that scripts Battle.net, the EA app and Ubisoft Connect [7]. Bottles is a Wine-prefix manager, not a store client — skip it unless you have one odd Windows app to sandbox.

The hard blocker

Anti-cheat splits into two kinds. Opt-in: Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye both ship Proton-compatible builds, so the developer flips a switch — CS2, Dota 2 and many EAC titles work. Rejection: Riot Vanguard, Activision RICOCHET and EA Javelin refuse Linux outright [3]. Across games tracked by AreWeAntiCheatYet, 55% are broken and 4% explicitly denied, versus 17% supported and 24% running unofficially [2]. ⚠ Some publishers ban accounts for running a denied title under Proton [6]. Valve’s $1,049 Steam Machine (June 29 2026, SteamOS 3) is the bet that this changes [8]; nothing has yet.

Steam’s own June 2026 survey shows the shift: SteamOS Holo 22.8%, CachyOS 14.0%, Arch 8.9%, Mint 7.9%, Bazzite 7.3% of Linux users [10]. Gaming distros buy setup time, not frames.

HDR, VRR, media

HDR gaming genuinely works in 2026 — KDE Plasma 6.7.3 has a Displays toggle plus gamescope for non-HDR titles [11]; it is Wayland-only and AMD/NVIDIA-only, Intel is incomplete [4]. GNOME’s pipeline is zero-config but weaker for high-refresh VRR. Hardware decode for local files is a solved config step (VA-API on AMD/Intel, nvidia-vaapi-driver for NVDEC) [12] — your Jellyfin/archive workflow is unaffected. Browser DRM is not: Linux gets Widevine L3 software-only regardless of browser, so no HDR and a 720p ceiling [4].

Check these before wiping

  1. Paste your Steam library into ProtonDB’s report view; count Bronze/Borked titles you actually play.
  2. List your multiplayer titles and look each up on areweanticheatyet.com. Any “Denied” → that game is gone, not delayed.
  3. Note which non-Steam stores you own games on. Battle.net/EA/Ubisoft → budget for Lutris.
  4. If you watch Netflix/Disney+ on the PC monitor and care about 1080p+, plan a Chromecast/Apple TV/console instead of the browser.
  5. Check your GPU: NVIDIA is workable but costs you extra config on HDR, VRR and browser decode; AMD is the low-friction path.
