TL;DR. Fly KK→Sandakan (~45 min, ~RM110/€24) — skip the 6-9 h winding coach unless you want the scenery [3][5]. Base in Sepilok, not Sandakan town — the wildlife trio (orangutans, sun bears, RDC) is walkable from the lodges, and you only need town for a half-day heritage walk [15]. Get around by Grab; no car hire needed [9]. The real day-trip is Labuk Bay proboscis monkeys; ⚠ Kinabatangan and Turtle Island are overnights, not day-trips — don’t try to compress them [18][13].

June 2026: €1 ≈ RM 4.70. Prices are indicative; book flights early for the best fares.

Getting in: Kota Kinabalu → Sandakan

Mode Time Approx fare Notes
Flight (AirAsia / AirBorneo/MASwings) ~45-50 min RM110-150 / €24-32; sale fares from ~RM70 / €15 Easiest, several daily; ⚠ book ahead [6][5][3]
Coach (Sida / Tung Ma / Amin Jaya) 5h30-7h30 scheduled, ~9-10 h door-to-door RM43-50 / €9-11 Departs Inanam terminal (north KK); ~14/day; ⚠ very winding road, motion-sickness risk; book on Easybook [1][2][3]
Self-drive ~6 h car hire + fuel Pan-Borneo road; only if you want stops [4]

Verdict: the flight wins on every axis except cost-by-a-few-euros. Take it.

Getting out: onward from Sandakan

Sandakan Airport (SDK) is small and domestic, ~13-15 km from town and ~16 km / 13-15 min from Sepilok — handy if you base in Sepilok [26][25].

Destination Routing Time Notes
Kuching (Sarawak) No direct; connect via KK or KUL half-day with layover SDK→KUL from ~US$31, then KUL→Kuching; or SDK→KK→Kuching [27]
Kuala Lumpur Direct AirAsia ~2h45 Frequent; the main hub out of Sabah’s east coast [27]
Kota Kinabalu Direct AirAsia / MASwings ~45 min Reverse of the inbound hop [6][7]
Semporna / Tawau (divers → Sipadan) Overland coach ~5-6 h direct (or break at Tawau) Private car ~4h15; minivan Semporna↔Tawau ~1.5 h [19][20]

Getting around locally

Base in Sepilok (Batu 14), not Sandakan town. The orangutan centre, sun bears and RDC are clustered there and walkable between lodges; town is a 25-26 km / ~25 min hop away and only needed for the heritage half-day [8][15].

Hop Mode Cost Notes
Sandakan town ↔ Sepilok Local bus #14 RM4 / €0.85 ~45 min, ~4 departures/day — infrequent [9]
Sandakan town ↔ Sepilok Grab ~RM25 / €5 Easiest; ~50% cheaper than street taxi [9]
SDK airport → Sepilok Taxi ~RM40 / €8.50 ~15 min [24][26]
SDK airport → town Taxi ~RM30 / €6.40 Fixed-ish coupon fares [24]

Car hire? Not needed. Grab covers town, Sepilok and the airport; day-trips and overnights are best done by tour transfer. Self-drive only adds value for Labuk Bay + Gomantong on your own schedule [9][10].

The day-trip orbit

Turtle Island (Selingan) boat overnight ~RM1,380 / €294 pkg; park entry ~RM50 / €11 NOT a day-trip — turtles land at night; one 10:00 boat, be in Sandakan by 09:00, limited chalets, ⚠ Jun-Sep surcharge, book early [13][14]

How to sequence it

  • Day 1 (Sepilok base): orangutan AM feeding → sun bears → RDC canopy → afternoon orangutan feeding. All on foot [15][17][16].
  • Day 2: Labuk Bay (half-day, time it for a feeding) [11].
  • Add an overnight: Kinabatangan 2D1N for wildlife, or Selingan for turtles — pick one, both if time allows [18][13].
  • Half-day filler: Sandakan heritage trail before flying onward [21].
