TL;DR. First time: stack free Garden Rhapsody at Supertree Grove (7:45pm) → walk to Spectra at MBS Event Plaza (9pm)[3][4]; eat hawker (Maxwell, Old Airport Road, Amoy Street) for under S$10 a meal[13][19]; spend a half-day at Gardens by the Bay's Cloud Forest + Flower Dome[2]. Skip the Singapore Flyer[5]. For drinks, go to Jigger & Pony (Asia #3, World #9)[72][74] and Atlas[77].

Marina Bay: stack the icons in one evening

The Marina Bay icon stack splits cleanly into "must-do free" and "pay only if the view matters to you." The orthodox locals-recommend evening: Garden Rhapsody 7:45pm at Supertree Grove[3], then 10-minute walk across to Spectra at the MBS Event Plaza for the 9pm show[4]. Both free. Stop at Merlion Park en route — 24/7, free, 15-minute photo stop[7].

Hawker culture: the city's defining democratic luxury

Hawker culture was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 16 December 2020 — Singapore's first such listing[18]. The 2025 MICHELIN Bib Gourmand list honours 89 affordable eateries, >70% of which are hawker stalls[11]. Most plates land between S$3 and S$10.

Bars and nightlife

Singapore is the densest cocktail city in Asia by ranking. Five bars sit in Asia's 50 Best Bars 2025 top 50[72]; another six on the extended 51–100 list[73]; and two on World's 50 Best Bars 2025[74].

Rooftops & the Sling

  • Long Bar at Raffles — birthplace of the Singapore Sling (created ~1915 by Hainanese bartender Ngiam Tong Boon)[75]; S$39 pre-service, ~S$47 all-in[76]. One sling, one peanut-shell floor — it's a ritual, not a destination drink.
  • CÉ LA VI — 57th floor of Marina Bay Sands; cheaper way to "do" the MBS view than buying the SkyPark ticket[80].
  • LeVeL33 — Marina Bay Financial Centre; world's highest urban craft microbrewery, lagers / ales / stouts / wheats brewed on-site[81].
  • 1-Altitude (One Raffles Place)closed as of late 2025; 1-Group's rooftop play is now 1-Altitude Coast on Sentosa[82].
  • Smoke & Mirrors (National Gallery rooftop)closed 15 March 2025 after nine years when its lease ended[92]. Its art-driven "Real Art of Drinking" menus[93] earned Time Out's #2 World's Best Rooftop Bar in 2024[94]. Don't route guests there — it no longer exists at that address.

Offbeat / contrarian picks

SpotStatusWhat
Haw Par Villa⚠ outdoor park closed from 8 Dec 2025 — Hell's Museum (from S$20) still openTiger Balm-funded Chinese mythology park; the "10 Courts of Hell" diorama is the centrepiece of Hell's Museum[83]

Geylang supper belt24/7Yong He Eating House (mala bak kut teh), 89.7 Supper Club, Kazutake Ramen — the city's after-midnight eat-anywhere zone[86]

Practical notes

  • Tipping & service charge. Restaurants typically add 10% service + 9% GST — so the menu price is ~19% short of what you'll pay. The Long Bar Sling line above (S$39 → S$47) is the canonical example[76].
  • Best time-of-day for big attractions. Gardens by the Bay conservatories at 9am opening[10]; Newton chilli crab 6–7pm or after 9:30pm[20]; Haji Lane 5–7pm[31]; Henderson Waves at 7pm+ for the LEDs[49].
  • Tourist traps to skip. Singapore Flyer[5]; MBS SkyPark deck if the view is the whole point — CÉ LA VI or LAVO buy you the height plus a drink[5].
  • Migration window. If your trip falls Aug–Apr, Sungei Buloh is a high-value half-day for shorebirds[52].
