Decision — Pick by what the rest of the weekend should look like:
Stay on the estate → La Dimora at Da Vittorio (10 rooms, R&C, €650–700, zero taxi)[1].
Small & theatrical, with Bergamo at your feet → Relais San Vigilio al Castello (9 rooms in 1630 castle barracks, San Vigilio hilltop)[13].
Best mix of character and value in Città Alta → Hotel Piazza Vecchia (13 rooms in a 14th-c townhouse, from €203)[9][10].
Skip the city, pick a wine estate → Villa Redona (16th-c Medolago Albani agriturismo, Trescore Balneario, €155–200)[16][17].
Taxi range, defined
Da Vittorio is in Brusaporto, 8.9 km from Bergamo's old town[4] and 10 minutes by car from the city according to the property itself[1]. The restaurant sits among ten hectares of countryside in the Bergamasco foothills[3]. A reasonable range for a post-dinner taxi back from a 3-Michelin tasting menu — i.e. somewhere between 22:30 and 01:00 — caps at roughly 20 minutes and €40 night-rate.
| From | Distance | Day taxi | Night (21:00–06:00) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brusaporto (on estate) | 0 km | — | — |
| Bergamo Città Alta | 8.9 km / ~11 min[4] | €16–20[4] | ~€19 (€7.60 base + 8.9 × €1.28)[5] |
| San Vigilio hilltop | ~11 km / ~15 min | €20–25 | ~€22 |
| Trescore Balneario (Villa Redona) | ~7 km / ~12 min | €15–20 | ~€17 |
The shortlist
La Dimora at Da Vittorio
The Cerea family's own Relais & Châteaux dimora, on the same 10-hectare estate as the restaurant — two natural lakes, vineyards, tennis court, private helipad, breakfast on a terrace looking at the kitchen garden[1][2]. Junior Suite €700, Double €650; closes ~20 days in August[1].
Pick when the dinner is the trip and you want to walk to bed.
Relais San Vigilio al Castello
Nine rooms in two interconnecting buildings that were the soldiers' quarters of the medieval San Vigilio castle, rebuilt 1630 and renovated in 2016[13]. Highest point in Bergamo, with views over Città Alta and the plain below[14]. Terrace under a centuries-old vine, on-site restaurant La Cucina[13].
Pick for the most "place" per room of any option here.
GombitHotel
Inside a 13th-century tower complex next to Gombito Tower, 2 min from Santa Maria Maggiore[7]. Designer Giò Pozzi interiors layered onto exposed brick and stone; only Bergamo member of Design Hotels[6][7]. Rates have ranged $210–$432/night recently[8].
Pick for design-led contemporary inside medieval walls.
Hotel Piazza Vecchia
Thirteen rooms across three floors of a 14th-century townhouse — exposed 1300s ceiling beams, wooden floors, vintage furniture — on the main street of Bergamo Alta[9]. Deluxe rooms (25 m²) have a small private balcony; rates start €203[10].
Pick for the best character-to-price ratio in Città Alta.
Relais San Lorenzo
Built over Roman archaeological remains preserved beneath crystal floors — the in-house restaurant Hostaria sits literally inside Roman walls[11]. Largest property here at 30 rooms; spa with Turkish bath, panoramic terrace over Città Alta[11]. Standard $294–678, suites $485–866[12].
Pick if you want a proper spa and the largest room inventory.
Villa Redona
Agriturismo on the Medolago Albani winery — a residence in the family since the late 16th century, with a manor house from the 1700s, historic cellars, and a 17th-c chapel[16]. 23 ha of south-facing vineyards in the Val Cavallina. Standard double €155, superior €185, suite €200[17].
Pick when you want a Lombard wine estate, not a city.
Palazzo Rivola
17th-century palazzo guesthouse a few steps from Piazza Vecchia, with a garden and — rare in Città Alta — on-site parking[15]. Suites have separate living areas and bedrooms.
Pick as the value option if Piazza Vecchia is sold out.

Skip these
Petronilla is a perfectly nice boutique with individually decorated rooms, but it's in the lower town (Città Bassa, San Lazzaro)[18] — same taxi distance to Brusaporto but none of the Città Alta atmosphere that justifies anchoring the weekend here. Hotel Cappello d'Oro is a 4-star Best Western Signature, also in the lower town — competent, not characterful. Skip both unless price is the only criterion. Castello Camozzi Vertova in Costa di Mezzate looks tempting on a map but is a private residence open only for events, not overnight guests.
Practicalities
- Book the return taxi before sitting down. Brusaporto cabs are not waiting outside; restaurants will call one for you but the wait at 23:30 on a Saturday can run 30–45 minutes. Ask the maître d' to call when you order dessert.
- Night surcharge kicks in at 21:00. €7.60 base + €1.28/km[5] — an 8.9 km ride from Brusaporto back to Città Alta works out to roughly €19 plus tip; the morning ride out is €16–20[4].
- La Dimora closes ~20 days in August[1]. The restaurant has its own annual closures — check both calendars before booking.
- Città Alta is pedestrianised. If you're driving in (e.g. from Trescore), Palazzo Rivola is one of the few addresses with on-site parking[15]; otherwise use the Fara or Mercato delle Scarpe car parks below the walls and take the funicular up.
