La Fontaine
Classical French in Hotel Ludwig im Park, Fallersleben — chef Hartmut Leimeister, twenty years at the pass[5]. Seven or eight tables. Book early.
Sven Elverfeld's Aqua served its final dinner on 20 March 2026 after 26 years and 15+ uninterrupted years at three stars[2]. The Ritz-Carlton has not announced a successor concept[3]. Three things hold the weekend together anyway: trains, the walkable canal axis, and Volkswagen gravity.
You came for a 3★ dinner in a city that hung itself on one — and the star went out two months before you got here. As of May 2026 Wolfsburg holds zero entries at 2★ or 3★, and only one 1★: La Fontaine out in Fallersleben, seven or eight tables, Wed–Sat only[5]. The city's only 3★ kitchen was inside the Ritz-Carlton inside Autostadt — same building, same lagoon view, all gone in one March evening.
That collides hard with the brief's geometry. The 30 km activity radius is fine: Braunschweig is 17 minutes by ICE[14]; Magdeburg's Hundertwasser sits an hour out[15]. But to find a 2★ kitchen you must leave that radius — Niedersachsen's only 2★s, Jante and Votum, are both in Hannover[12], 31 minutes by ICE[13].
So this issue is laid out around the choice rather than the closure: stay local at 1★, downgrade to Terra one floor down from where Aqua was, or ride 31 minutes west and break the Wolfsburg-anchor premise. What follows treats each of those options as a real itinerary, with the train table on page 1 because that's the actual decision tool.

The surviving Ritz-Carlton restaurant — seasonal regional cuisine, floor-to-ceiling windows over the VW works and the harbour basin where Aqua used to be[6].

31 min ICE west to Hannover[13]. Jante 6-course €140[8]; Votum 6-course €185 / 7-course €220[9]. Sleep in Hannover; ride back Sunday morning.

Zaha Hadid's concrete sculpture at the station's south side, 300+ hands-on phenomena [27]. Signature: the hourly six-metre fire tornado.

Seven brand pavilions — VW, Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Porsche etc. [25] — plus ZeitHaus with 260+ vehicles across a century [26].

Off the spine, on Hollerplatz — Minimal / Concept / Arte Povera onward, 2–3 changing shows a year. Last-Wednesday free 16–21.

Henry the Lion's medieval town — Dom, Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, and the unmistakable Happy Rizzi House (2001) pasted onto the Magniviertel [47].

Land of a thousand ditches — transnational UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2023, just east of Wolfsburg [45]. Drömlingsstieg long-distance trail.

UNESCO since 1985 — Bernward's c. 1020 bronze doors and a 1300-piece painted wooden ceiling, between the Mariendom and Michaeliskirche [52].

Harz UNESCO trio — Altstadt with 1,800 timber-framed houses, the largest Romanesque palace in Europe at Kaiserpfalz, plus the Rammelsberg mine [53].
The largest inner-German border crossing — Zonengrenz-Museum opened 1994 documenting escape, border construction and opening [51].

Renaissance castle that gave the city its name — houses Kunstverein, Städtische Galerie, Institut Heidersberger and the Stadtmuseum across four cultural institutions [59].
A two-thirds circle, facing the lagoon, by Günter Henn.
170 rooms inside Autostadt itself, a heated floating outdoor pool, and the architecture you came to see anyway [35]. Now that Aqua's space sits closed, this is a hotel without its restaurant — but the lagoon view, the spa, the pool and the location are all unchanged. Terra is one floor down.
If you'd rather sleep in town: Leonardo Hotel Wolfsburg City Center, 4★ on Porschestraße, from about $74/night and a five-minute walk to everything [37].
3D-printing & robotics in the Zaha Hadid hall — one Thursday a month, in-person + YouTube, no ticket needed [29]. A clean warm-up before a Fri/Sat dinner.
The International Suppliers Fair fills every hotel within 30 km and pushes rates to their annual peak [39]. Unless you're attending, do not plan a leisure weekend here in late October.
| Restaurant | Kind | Why it's on the list |

| Altes Brauhaus zu FallerslebenFallersleben | Brewpub · trad. | Brews its own Fallersleber Schlossbräu since 1986, twenty hand-brewed beers (all-organic malt since 2019), Schnitzel and Bregenwurst [57]. |

The Ritz-Carlton has said it will realign its gastronomy — but no concept, no chef, no timeline. Until they speak, this is a weekend you plan around a great non-starred dinner in town, or around a 2★ in Hannover with the lodging shifted to match.
