Walking-distance lodging at or near Moor Hall

Only Moor Hall itself is true walking distance; the next-closest hotels are 1.4–1.6 mi rural-road walks better done as a £5 taxi.

Decision. For a Saturday three-Michelin-star dinner [17] at Moor Hall [2], the only genuine walking-distance lodging is Moor Hall itself — 14 rooms from £270 B&B [4]. It is also the only on-property option: the restaurant sits on a 5-acre rural plot on Prescot Road [1], and the next-closest hotels — West Tower (1.4 mi) and Birches Brow (1.6 mi) — are along unlit country lanes [9]. Treat them as a £4–5 taxi ride [11], not a walk back from dinner.

What “walking distance” actually means here

Moor Hall sits at Prescot Road, Aughton, L39 6RT — a Grade II*-listed manor on a five-acre plot near (but not inside) Aughton village [1]. The location is rural: Prescot Road, Formby Lane and Mill Lane are narrow lanes with limited pavement and no streetlights in stretches. After a long tasting menu finishing late, “walkable in daylight” and “walkable back from dinner” are different questions — and only Moor Hall passes the second test.

The nearest railway station, Town Green (Merseyrail Northern Line to Liverpool / Ormskirk) [15], is a 15–20-minute walk from the restaurant [8] — useful for arrivals, but not as a lodging anchor.

On-property: Moor Hall

Fourteen bedrooms across three sub-locations on the estate [2] [4]:

Building Rooms Style From (B&B)
Gatehouse 2 Heritage cottage by the lake (Elderberry, Medlar) £275
Main House 5 Period rooms in the 16th-c. manor (Rosehip → Mulberry) £300–£425
Garden Rooms 7 Koto Scandi timber cabins with outdoor hot tubs £450–£500

The Garden Rooms are prefabricated Koto cabins opened July 2024, named after botanicals (Melilot, Sea Buckthorn, Woodruff, Sweet Cicely, Oxalis, Borage, Anise Hyssop) [5] [6]. A Country & Town House reviewer staying in Borage praised the muted Scandi finish, outdoor hot tub, and UK-made Pelegrims toiletries [7]. Rates are bed & breakfast inclusive [8]; the eight-course dinner is booked separately (~£235 in 2025 reviews, verify current price when booking).

Closures: the rooms close 1–17 Jan and 27 Jul–16 Aug each year [4] — check before locking a Saturday.

Pick: Gatehouse (Elderberry/Medlar) is the value entry; Garden Rooms are the destination experience if the budget allows. Main House sits between, with lake views and period detail.

Per Tripadvisor’s “10 closest to Moor Hall” list, only two hotels fall inside a 2-mile radius [9]. A third — Miller & Carter Aughton / Innkeeper’s Lodge — is roughly 1.5 mi but at a busier junction.

Property Distance Address Rating From Notes
West Tower 1.4 mi Mill Lane, Aughton, L39 7HJ 4.8/5 (413) [12] ~£100–£150 Country-house wedding venue; among the most-booked in Aughton [12]
Birches Brow Boutique Guestrooms 1.6 mi Birches Brow, Formby Lane, L39 7HG 4.5/5 (126) [11] ~£175 8-room boutique B&B; basket breakfast; hosts give lifts [10] [11]
Miller & Carter / Innkeeper’s Collection ~1.5 mi Springfield Road, Aughton, L39 6ST 3★ chain inn ~£90–£110 Lodge above a steakhouse; near Town Green station [13] [14]

Birches Brow is the strongest pairing with a Moor Hall dinner. Guests report £4.50 taxi fares to the restaurant and the owner (Steve) has driven guests over personally [11] — effectively a hosted alternative to a Moor Hall room at roughly a third of the Garden Room price. Breakfast is delivered to the room as a basket [10]. Tripadvisor ranks it #2 of 2 B&Bs in Aughton, 4.5/5 from 126 reviews [11].

West Tower is closer but functions primarily as a wedding venue — Saturday-night availability is the constraint, not price [12].

Miller & Carter / Innkeeper’s Lodge is the budget fallback — adequate chain rooms above a steakhouse, useful only if the other three are booked or you want to walk to Town Green station the next morning [13] [14].

Booking sequence

  1. Book Moor Hall dinner first — three-Michelin Saturdays sell out weeks ahead [17].
  2. On the dinner confirmation page, check rooms — bundling avoids a taxi, an extra check-in, and the 1.4-mile-after-tasting-menu problem [8].
  3. If Moor Hall rooms are full or out of budget, take Birches Brow [10] and pre-arrange the £4.50 taxi return [11]. Book a return cab when you book the room — Aughton has limited late-night taxi supply.
  4. Use the next morning for the canal walk that starts a mile from Moor Hall (8.5-mile Liverpool–Leeds Canal circular) or drive 25 min to Formby Beach / Crosby for Gormley’s Another Place [16].
