Inside the Star

Five plates within the moat. Every sight on the plan, every plan on the plate.
Peperbus tower in Zwolle
I

Peperbus

75 M TOWER · €4 ADULT · 236 STEPS

The "pepper-pot" tower (1463–1483, copper cap added 1828) attached to the Basilica; viewing platform at 51m gives the cleanest aerial-feel view of the star outline [1]. Stairs narrow and dizzying — not for small children [2].

Sassenpoort medieval gate in Zwolle
II

Sassenpoort

C. 1409 · TOP-100 NL · OPEN 4 D/WEEK

Sole survivor of Zwolle's three medieval gates: trachyte, tuff and Bentheimer sandstone, restored 1894–97 by Van Lokhorst [3]. Climb ~100 steps past four floors of Hanseatic exhibits to the clock mechanism — compact but rich in atmosphere [5].

Grote Kerk Zwolle interior
III

Grote Kerk / Academiehuis

1406–1466 · GROTE MARKT 18 · FREE

Lower-Rhine Gothic hall church whose 115–120m tower — briefly taller than Utrecht's Dom — collapsed 17 December 1682 and was never rebuilt [6]. Restored as Academiehuis: day café, book market, 1721 Schnitger organ [8].

Potgietersingel rampart walk
IV

Potgietersingel

BEST-PRESERVED STAR · ~30 MIN · FREE

The 17th-century moat's south rampart, redeveloped as a wooded promenade in the early 19th century — the cleanest way to read the star plan on foot, city on one side, canals on the other [10]. The 2.4 km Hanzestadswandeling loop traces the same ring [32].

Zwolle historic city
V

Stadhuis

RIJKSMONUMENT · 15TH-C. CORE

A patchwork stitched from the 1448 Wijnhuis, Meenthuis, Raadhuis tower and 1440s city school, with Late Gothic rear façades surviving under plaster behind a much-debated 1975 concrete extension [11]. Three medieval towers also survive: Zwanen-, Wijndragers- and Pelsertoren [4].
