The decision

Book a room with L'Enclume first — the rate guarantees your Saturday table and breakfast at Rogan & Co [2], and every room is a ≤5-minute village walk [3]. If they're sold out, the Cavendish Arms is on the same street [8], or Kings Arms is 60 paces across the square [10]. For more comfort at a 15-min walk: Aynsome Manor (5-star Georgian, complimentary chauffeur) [14].

The Numbered Key

L'Enclume restaurant exterior, Cartmel

L'Enclume — Our Rooms

Boutique B&B · 16 rooms · 4 categories

Sixteen individually designed bedrooms in cottages and a townhouse overlooking the square [6]. Rates from $174; Nespresso + Bose in every room [5].

★ A Saturday table is locked in with the room. Breakfast next morning at Rogan & Co (also Michelin-starred). DB&B package Tue–Fri only — not Saturdays.

The Cavendish Arms, Cartmel

The Cavendish Arms

500-yr coaching inn · 10 rooms · same street

Grade II listed coaching inn next to the Priory archways, a stone's throw from L'Enclume's door [9]. £75–£125/night with breakfast [8].

→ the obvious fallback. Closest non-L'Enclume bed, still two-figure most nights.

3
2 min
The Kings Arms, Cartmel Square

The Kings Arms

18th-c gastro pub · 6 rooms · on the Square

Six rooms named after Romantic poets (Coleridge, Blake, Shelley, Byron, Keats, Wordsworth) in a 300-year-old building overlooking the medieval square [10].

→ pick over Cavendish if you want the square view. Louder on a Saturday — live music downstairs.

4
2 min
The Royal Oak Inn, Cartmel

The Royal Oak

Traditional inn · few rooms · just round the corner

A small number of rooms above a flagstone-and-beam pub on the Square; cooked breakfast included [11]. Pizza and pub-classics downstairs — useful as Friday-night warm-up.

⚠ tall guests duck for beams; Wi-Fi patchy.

6 min
Cartmel Old Grammar boutique hotel

Cartmel Old Grammar

Georgian boutique country house · 12 rooms

Twelve rooms in a Georgian boutique house pressed up against the Cartmel Racecourse [12]. Cooked-to-order breakfast, two log-fire lounges, on-site Refectory Restaurant [13].

→ quieter and more polished than the village inns, still a trivial walk to dinner.

through open meadowland

Aynsome Manor

5-star Georgian manor B&B · ¾ mi north

Five-star Georgian B&B in open meadowland three-quarters of a mile from the village [14]. Locally-sourced "Cartmel breakfast," evening turndown, and — the kicker — a complimentary chauffeur service for the local area.

★ the strongest pick if you don't want to walk Cartmel Lane after wine pairings. Aynsome drives you to L'Enclume's door.

~ family-run country inn ~
two acres of garden

Uplands Inn

Independent country inn · 8 rooms · between Cartmel & Grange

Eight bedrooms in a family-run independent inn in two acres of gardens, with on-site restaurant and Cask-Marque-accredited real ale [16]. Walk is 15–30 min depending on pace [17].

→ fine in daylight, less appealing post-tasting in the rain. Take a taxi back.

~ off the edge of the map ~ Heft, Inn + Restaurant in High Newton is a Michelin-starred 17th-century inn with five rooms, run by Kevin Tickle — eight years a sous chef under Rogan at L'Enclume before opening Heft [19] [20]. A ~5-mile drive — not walkable, but relevant if "Michelin star with your bed" is the actual brief and L'Enclume's own rooms are gone.

For a Saturday-evening table

  • Book the room and the dinner together via L'Enclume whenever possible — the only way to guarantee the Saturday table without separately fighting for restaurant-only seats [1].
  • The DB&B Package (sparkling wine + 15-course tasting + bed + breakfast) is Tue–Fri only. Saturdays bill room and dinner separately [4].
  • Every option above includes breakfast — but only L'Enclume's room rate sends you to a separate Michelin-starred restaurant (Rogan & Co) for it [1].

Arriving

  • No rail station in Cartmel. Nearest are Cark-in-Cartmel (2 mi) and Grange-over-Sands (3 mi) [18].
  • Most lodgings will arrange a taxi. Aynsome Manor includes a chauffeur outright [14].
  • L'Enclume sits at Cavendish Street, LA11 6QA — the village core, three streets and a square.
