What counts as "taxi range"
Subtiel sits at Westhoeklaan 31 on the Westhoek/Dumontwijk edge of De Panne, in a seaside villa next to the dune reserve [1]. The Dumontwijk's Art Nouveau / Art Deco villas start one block inland [4], so much of the best lodging is in walking distance — no taxi needed. Beyond town:
- Veurne — ≈5 km, 7 min taxi, €25–35 one-way [3].
- Oostduinkerke / Koksijde — ≈7 km, 10–15 min taxi [16].
Subtiel runs no rooms of its own and points diners at the Visit De Panne tourism site rather than a curated list [2] — which is why this shortlist exists.

Cottage-style Art Deco villas with a garden, 200 m from the sea, on Albert Dumontlaan in the heritage quarter [5][6]. The most "characterful hotel" option — you sleep inside the Dumont architecture rather than next to it. Rainwater system, EV chargers, on-site restaurant.
B&B Villa Bon Papa
1924 villa in the protected Dumontwijk streetscape, fully restored in 2017–2018, three rooms each with private bath and the original staircase preserved [7]. Scores 9.6 on Booking (181 reviews, location 9.8) — Booking's top-tier for the area [8].
Maison Botanique
Ground-floor apartment in Villa Les Lauriers, an authentic Belle Époque villa on Bortierlaan, 200 m from the beach [9]. Contemporary botanical interior inside a heritage shell. Best for two couples or a small family sharing a kitchen.
Hotel Villa Select
Family-run hotel in a 1911 neogothic building right on the sea wall at Walckierstraat 7 [10][11]. Indoor pool, sauna, hammam, sea-view restaurant. Pick this if you want the heritage façade and a wellness/pool stay; it's further from Subtiel along the seafront.
Hotel Donny
Four-star family-run hotel near the beach with indoor pool, children's pool, spa, sauna and hammam [12]. Less "heritage villa", more "comfortable Belgian-coast spa hotel" — the right call if you're travelling with kids and need facilities Bon Papa and Botanique can't offer.
Auberge De Klasse
Restored 1725 heritage-listed building in Veurne's historic centre with a walled flower garden. #1 of 11 Veurne B&Bs on Tripadvisor, 5/5 average; reviewers call it "the best B&B in Belgium" [13]. Originally a farm, then a wartime school — hence "De Klasse" (the classroom).
't Kasteel & 't Koetshuys
Period house B&B 0.2 mi from Veurne's Grote Markt with 8 individually decorated rooms, fireplaces, garden hens supplying breakfast eggs; 9.2 on Booking from 69 reviews [14]. ⚠ Two of the rooms aren't ensuite — ask when booking.
Boutique Hotel Hof ter Duinen
Family-run four-star at Albert I-Laan 141, Oostduinkerke, 100 m from dunes and sea, with sauna, hammam, spa bath, eucalyptus therapy room and on-site bistronomie restaurant Eglantier [15]. About 7 km / 10–15 min by taxi from Subtiel along the N34 coastal road [16]. Pick if you want full spa amenities and don't mind not being in De Panne.

How to decide
- Couple, want to walk back through the dunes after dinner → Villa Bon Papa or Parkhotel. Both are in the Dumontwijk, ~10 min on foot to Subtiel.
- Couple with friends sharing a place → Maison Botanique — one apartment, sleeps 4, kitchen, same neighbourhood.
- Family with kids needing pool/space → Hotel Donny in De Panne, or Hof ter Duinen if you'd rather be on the dunes and don't mind a short taxi each way.
- You care more about a heritage town than the beach → Auberge De Klasse in Veurne. The 1725 farmhouse and Tripadvisor #1 rank are the differentiators; you pay €25–35 each way to taxi to Subtiel [3].
