TL;DR. For a quick fix from Ghent: bike or paddle the Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen marshes after work
[2]. For a weekend, head to the
Belgian Ardennes — kayak the Lesse from Houyet (~€20 pp, 3 hrs)
[9] and sleep in a Durbuy treehouse with an outdoor jacuzzi (~€140/night)
[26]. For one big memorable splurge: a sunrise hot-air balloon over Bruges with
Bruges Ballooning (€160 pp, champagne on landing)
[13]. Anchor the year around three set-pieces — tulip cycling near
Keukenhof in late April
[29], golden beech walking in the
Sonian Forest mid-October
[35], and stargazing the Milky Way from Signal de Botrange in February
[17].

Practical notes
- Book the balloon first. Bruges Ballooning operates Apr–Oct only, sells out on weekends, and weather can scrub flights — pick a 2-night stay so you have a buffer day[11].
- Lesse kayaking has water-level requirements (Apr–Oct only)[8]. Houyet is a direct train from Ghent via Brussels–Namur — the kayak company runs a return shuttle, so no car needed.
- Marche-les-Dames is weekends-only. The site is wedged into an active military training zone; midweek access is denied[25].
- Cycling Through Water and Cycling Through the Trees can be combined. Both sit in Limburg's cycle-node network[41] — about 35 km between them; rent at Bokrijk, drop in Hechtel.
- For dark skies near home, Signal de Botrange and the Eupen-Malmedy plateau are the only Belgian spots where the Milky Way is naked-eye visible[17]. Best on a moonless winter night when the bog mist has cleared.
- Cycle-route tip. Visit Flanders publishes free GPX downloads for the entire numbered cycle-node network[41]; pair with the AllTrails Ghent set for foot-only trails[39].
